Marouane Fellaini and Robert Huth face bans with FA expected to take action over Man United vs Leicester clash

Marouane Fellaini and Robert Huth are set to be issued with violent conduct charges by the Football Association on Tuesday following the pair’s ugly clash during Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Leicester City on Sunday.

The first-half clash, which saw Leicester defender Huth pull Fellaini’s hair before the United midfielder retaliated by appearing to elbow the German, was missed by referee Michael Oliver and his assistants.

But with television footage clearly highlighting the incident, the two players are both expected to be subjected to retrospective action and charged.

With violent conduct carrying an automatic three-match suspension if the charge is upheld, both Fellaini and Huth would be ruled out of their clubs’ remaining league games – Huth would also face a ban for the opening game of next season, due to Leicester only having two games to play this term.

United manager Louis van Gaal attempted to defend Fellaini following the incident, but insisted that Huth was the aggressor and therefore more deserving of punishment.

“When you grab somebody in his hair and you are tying it backwards then it is a penalty,” Van Gaal said.

“So I expect first that Huth shall be getting a lot (FA charge) because I don’t think that is normal in what he is doing.

“Fellaini is reacting like a human being because when I grab you with your hair and pull it backwards, you shall do also something to me, I believe.”

If Fellaini is suspended for three games, the Belgian would be unavailable for the forthcoming league games against Norwich, West Ham and Bournemouth, but would be free to play in the FA Cup Final against Crystal Palace at Wembley.
