I've always been interested in gender and food. Why is yogurt marketed to women? Why do people expect me to not drink sugary fruity alcohol, and in particular what's this link with red meat and being a man?

I'm not a vegetarian and I do enjoy eating meat, but I understand that eating meat can have a negative environment and in excess, health consequences.

This article makes a connection between eating meat and the messages men are taught about violence. It does give a new insight on the male=meat association we see in our culture.

I think that's because, since the industry managed to link femininity to thinness, they are looking for other ways to market the fatty stuff.

Also, publicity teaches us that feminine traits are undesirable. Therefore, caring for one's physique and wellbeing is not masculine enough (except when the physique is “buffed out of proportion”). To be manly, you should't give a fuck to your body, so they label the unhealthy stuff as manly.

Easy. :)

It really is a shame. This would be one (among several I would argue) problems with an economic system where businesses rely on profit. It is almost always more advantageous for these industries to perpetuate whatever is the social norm of their time. As much as I hate merely reform and replacing one hegemony with another that's "not as bad," all we can really do in the meantime is to collectively change the social norm with another one.

My Anarchist buddies would hate me for saying this, but what it may take is to somehow make it more profitable for businesses to adopt less conventional and more animal-friendly practices of production. This won't be easy considering how much money is made off of meat industries and the lobbying power they have, but I suppose we've made changes in the past to the social order. This is tricky, because we may end up just making it harder on impoverished people who can't afford to go vegan.

I suppose we could make it so that nobody's poor anymore, but that's looked down upon in the US.

As I view it, advertising linking meat and other unhealthy stuff to masculinity is leveraged by the notion that, to be a real man, you should do and be the diametral opposite of a woman.

To care about you put in your body, to care about your shape and to eat light and fresh are a girls thing. To be manly is not do as much harm as you can to your body.

I went vegetarian last November and this connection with masculinity is definitely something I've noticed. I thought the article really showed how ridiculous this connection with meat and masculinity is. I don't know. Maybe it just struck a chord with me because I've been through some (admittedly minor) ridicule. I really hope more articles like this could really change how some people look at what they eat, both from a personal and ethical standpoint.

Thank you for posting this. I'm a man who also happens to be a vegetarian. I'm not preachy, I keep it to myself and when I talk to other people about it, I don't even like to label myself a vegetarian, I deliberately just say that "I don't really eat meat". A lot of people have still made me feel like less of a man for it though and it sucks. Food is just food.
