i find it so interesting how westerners make the japanese out to be crazy. let me ask everyone here, how did the americans make american soldiers sit in the boats of the first wave on the normandy invasion? so americans are brave and the japanese are just brainwashed and crazy? it's part honor and part being forced to do it. every military is like that. it's not some mystery. soldiers in every army during ww2 have had to go on missions that they know have a 0% chance of survival. how many men died on the first wave of normandy vs kamikaze pilots? japan didn't even have 100 planes left by that time. how many died on the first wave? 100s? 1000s? would you rather drown in a boat with absolutely 0 chance of killing an enemy or would you rather crash your plane into a ship and destroy it? so please, this sub is suppose to have a higher standard and smarter redditors right? stop being so racist.
edit: well i'm not going to reply to everyone. none of you answered my question. isnt that a surprise? let see
first excuse: operation overlord was extremely risky but not certain death. of course it wasn't and that wasn't what i said. i said the first wave of the normandy invasion. that was definitely certain death and every soldier knew it.
second excuse: buffoonish equivocation because japan committed atrocities. this is not a discussion about how evil japan was. this is a discussion about westerners always being confused at how the japanese could commit suicide like that when conveniently forgetting that americans have done so too as soldiers and every military on earth have had it happen to them too. it's just that when a westerner commits suicide for a military operation, he is a hero. john r fox called an artillery strike on his own position, medal of honor. japanese pilot trades his life for the lives of 100s of american navy men, "wahhhhhhhh the japanese are crazyyyyyyy."
third excuse: belittling my statement by saying i'm trying to spread propaganda. how am i spreading propaganda? i'm pointing to the truth. why do westerners online make it out that the japanese are so completely weird and fucked up? look back at yourself please. you are the ones spreading propaganda.
none of you managed a satisfactory answer because you can't. the two situations are the same and you're all just biased. so please, do me a favor and stop pretending like people who frequent this sub is highly educated or intelligent. fact of the matter is, military doctrine means a soldier's jobs is to do or die. if you run during a battle, you can be shot by your commanding officer. soldiers can be sent into any situation and they have absolutely no choice. it doesnt matter if they know they have a chance or not. that is the only way to ensure proper execution of military operations. if a general is afraid of his soldiers dying, he can never win a battle. so don't ask why japanese pilots did it. you know why because every military system is the same with regards to the value of a soldier's life. so don't be so racist and so biased that you point to a foreign culture and ask why when the same happens in your own culture.
this is not directed at op, it is directed at westerners in general because i've seen this question brought up so many times as if american soldiers had a choice whether they go into battle or not. from the moment they born, they had no choice. if you are a draft dodger, you are shamed by everyone and have a felony on your record. you will be imprisoned. is that really a choice? then you sit here and ask why a japanese pilot would trade his life for a military operation? every soldier trades his life for military operations.
i know none of you here are going to take my side but i'm going to post it anyway. the white circlejerk on reddit is strong. now all that's left in thread is white people circlejerking about how crazy the japanese are but oh no, american soldiers are just brave.
