Does Michael Carrick Warrant a One-Year Contract Extension At Manchester United?
Michael Carrick has split opinion throughout his career like no other.
‘He’s predictable and only passes the ball sideways or back towards defence or his goalkeeper.’ However, that is just a simplistic view on how Carrick navigates a game of football, and the job he and midfielders of the same ilk carry out is often unappreciated.
Not the fastest or the most physical, it is Carrick’s technique and passing ability that sets him apart, not to mention the defensive shifts or clever interceptions that other players fail to read in anticipation.
Until now some of those that are usually found fighting Carrick’s corner can be seen questioning whether he should be ushered silently through the Old Trafford back door when his contract expires this summer. And while there are arguments for that decision, the club itself is unsure if it’s a good time to jump ship, waiting to hear from the next manager — potentially Jose Mourinho — if Carrick is part of his plans.
Carrick has aged and may not be as quick, but pace was never part of his game, which consisted of snuffing out attacks and giving more presence in midfield.
There was a time when the England international formed a formidable partnership in midfield with Darren Fletcher, offering regular support for Ji-Sung Park or Anderson, but no matter who joined Carrick, in the quarterback role, he kept the team ticking over as well as protecting the back four when required.
The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder will be a Manchester United player 10-years this August, earning a well-deserved testimonial, after winning five Premier League titles and a Champions League winners medal. While it’s no secret that all good things come to an end and many will say Carrick is no longer capable of playing at this standard, United have lost too many key members from the dressing room in recent years. Footballers that know how to win, like, Patrice Evra adding another Serie A to his list of honours earlier this week.
Losing players such as Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic also had knock-on effects not only on the pitch, but in and around the club. Carrick may not be a player Louis van Gaal or the next manager fancies week-in week-out, although considering ‘The United Way’ has been ingrained in him since his arrival, selling the Marmite may prove to be a hindrance.
Carrick is undeniably past his best and some may begin to label him ‘deadwood’ but this United squad is thin enough already and in its current state, cannot afford too many outward transfers. If anything, recruitment is essential especially if European football is secured. Otherwise there may be more freedom in the market.
Does Carrick deserve a new contract? Yes, give him another year before considering his future with a potential coaching role in the pipeline. There are other players currently at Old Trafford that need selling or releasing first.
