I just got off the phone with a middle-aged man in Indiana who, after asking me a very pointed question about Bernie's inheritance tax and "who does he think he is," told me that he feels that what we have now is a kind of economic natural selection where the most economically strong can grow and the economically weak can die off and make room.

I told him I didn't disagree and then proceeded to tell him about how my father passed away a year ago due to cancer and without health insurance, how what he left me barely covered the cost of the funeral, and how I now have to deal with the never ending hospital debt. I told him how much of my family has had to make the incredibly difficult choice of going to college and saddling themselves with insurmountable debt (but potentially rising above the culture of poverty in Eastern KY, maybe even making a positive change in that area) or staying with their families and beginning to work some dead-end minimum wage job to help support their already poor family.

He didn't know when he picked up the phone, but I made sure he understood before we said our goodbyes that I was one of those "economically weak" he spoke so abstractly about and I sure as hell made sure he understood the real HUMAN impact of what he was saying. He retorted with, "I know this makes me sound like an asshole, but that's the way I think," as if that's supposed to make it okay that he had just said what he did. And he was perfectly fine talking to me when he thought he had me pinned in a corner, but I got to him and made him think and he suddenly got busy.

I don't know if he'll vote for Bernie, but he at least knows that there's someone in Kentucky fighting to overturn this economic natural selection he seemed to be such a big fan of.
