File Access Denied - You require permission from the computer's administrator to make changes to this file

Q: File Access Denied - You require permission from the computer's administrator to make changes to this file

I run into this problem often. When working with Photoshop files (PSD in the most recent case), sometimes when I make a change and then try to save the changes I come up with this error dialog. My work flow is always the same - I am the computer's administrator.
I am the only person with access to this computer. There are no other users on this computer. This computer is not tied to any server or network. My files are generated from my own work obtained from my camera. I normally save changes to the file several times
so I won't lose my work. I can save the file using a different name, but then I cannot delete the original file unless I reboot the computer and open it up again. Please explain why this randomly reoccurs.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi dmiddleton123,
"When working with Photoshop files (PSD in the most recent case), sometimes when I make a change and then try to save the changes I come up with this error dialog. "
When did the issue start to occur ?The issue only occur with the specific software ?Have you tried to change another location to saved file or reopen the software (end the software process from the task manager)to have a check ?
This issue is a little weired, please take the following steps to have a check .
1.Run "sfc /scannow" to check the health of the system files .
2.Perform a full scan with an antivirus software .
3.Perform a clean boot to verify whether there is a third party conflict here.
How to perform a clean boot in Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135
4.Create a new administrator and login with it to have a check. There is a possibility that the present account profile has corrupted.

If the issue only occurred with the specific software ,it is also recommended to ask for help from the software developer .
Best regards

I have run into this more than once before, and I'm looking for a straight answer as to why this is happening.
There is an avi file in C:\some folder, and I can't rename it.  The message is, "You require permission from Administrators to make changes to this file."  The problem is that I am using an administrator account, and when I look at the
permissions for that file, Administrators is granted Full control.  (I don't know whether an administrator account implies membership in the Administrators group in Windows 7, but I am in that group, in this case).
I also saw that Everyone had Read and Read & Execute permissions, so I tried just granting that group Full control.  This just gave the error message, "Unable to save permission changes on 3441.avi.  Access is denied."
I just want to get an authoritative answer on why this happening and on how to fix it.  Thanks.
Edit:
I am able to access that file with user Administrator, but not with my own personal Administrators account.  I tried using Administrator to explicitly add my personal account to the permissions for the file, granting it Full control, but I am still
unable to use the personal account to change the file; only Administrator works.

A:I am an Administrator, but I keep getting errors like, "You require permission from Administrators to make changes to this file."

Hi,
This situation happens because you are not the owner of this folder of file, The default owner of a file or folder is the person who creates the resource.

Log on the computer with the account which created the folder of file, namely the owner, then you are permitted to modify the file or folder.

Also, you can follow this article to assign ownership of files and folders:

hey, new to the place, been looking for help, figured id try here. heres my story:

sold my computer to this lady. erased all my crap from it, but did not reinstall windows or anything. basicaly sold as is. took the harddrive form her old computer, put it into her new ( my old) computer, and had to take a bunch of pictures and files off of there.

she just had a baby, so she has pictures from its 1st through 9th month, sorted in folders.

all pictures and folders were swapped from her old hdd to the new computer, except for one: 2nd month

wen i try to open or copy or do anything with the folder, it tells me access denied. her account on the computer is administrator, because she is either signed into my acc (i used the defualt administrator from the begining of xp install, never made an account for myself) or on an account that i might have made for her (dont remember if i did or not, i sold her the computer back in mid august.

now shes basically harrassing me about her 2nd folder, saying stuff like "its my babys life that were talking about, it was his 2nd month! " etc etc., meanwhile in my mind im thinking "like theres really going to be much difference between he ending of his 1st month and the begining of his 3rd month.

anyway, need help on how to take the file and put it onto her computer, cuz im tired of hearing her QQ and flip out and ****. if she were someone else, id say **** it and just ignore her calls, but shes my friends older sister... Read more

I spotted what I thought was adware and deleted it. It was called add.... something that was the first one in a list of the same type, I wasnt sure about deleteing the rest of them after deleteing the first one so to be sure I Googled it and found it was a certificate? I ran sfc/scannow to see if it would fix it but I cant open the CBS file in notepad to see if it worked? (access denied) Im the only one who has ever used this computer so I dont know how Im not the administrator? I found a fix to get admin rights back on Youtube but its too complicated for me to follow,is there by chance an easy way to do this? (get admin rights)

I have a problem with a temp file in my Standard account. I have a clean install of Windows 7 on a new hard drive.   I also installed Office Enterprise 2007.  I have the previous hard drive plugged into the system and am tryint to move my files across.   When I try to move the outlook data files from the old location G:\Documents and Settings\...\Local Settings\Microsoft\Outlook\ to a folder on my new hard drive, it tells me I need aministrator permission to move the file.   I am the only user on the system and have admin priveledges.   How do I overcome this permissions garbage?Or... how do I migrate my existing Outlook.pst file from the XP install into my new install of Outlook on Win 7?  Thanks

A:"You'll need to provde administrator permission to move this file."

Take the ownership of the file and then you should be able to move it. Right click the file, select properties. Select Security tab from the properties window. Click Advanced. Select the owner tab. Click Edit. It will tell you who the current owner is. Most likely it will be system. Select your user account from the change owner to: and make sure that you select Replace owner on subcontainers and objects. Wait for it to finish. OK out of the windows. Try to move the file now. Most likely you should be able to.

Hi,
i have two computers, my main desktop and a laptop. For my work i sync my files between the two over my home network using Free File Sync (ffs).

For some reason ffs will sync across from my laptop to my desktop but not from my desktop to laptop. All the sync settings are set to copy both ways, ffs is running as admin and i am the only user of both computers so they are both running as admin.
I have set up homegroup between the two and i can easily copy any file type between both computers both ways. Permissions as far as i can tell are set to allow home groups, admins and all users.
But ffs still will only sync one way from my desktop to my laptop... any ideas? (i am given the: windows error code 5: access denied message whenever i click 'sync')

I am working on a project.
I have to replace that project with a backup that I have, and I discovered that I am unable to remove the folder. I cannot remove it because I, for some reason, do not have appropriate permissions to access a subfolder. When I double-click that sub-folder,
a pop-up box appears saying: "C:\[directory] is not accessible. Access is denied.".
First of all; I am administrator on the computer, running Windows 8.1 Enterprise.
When I right-click the folder, and going to Security >
Advanced the pop-up says: "You must have Read permissions to view the properties of this object. Click Continue to attempt the operation with administrative permissions.". When I click "Continue", the new pop-up basically says the
same exact thing: "You do not have permissions to view or edit this object's permission settings.".
In the first pop-up under Owner it says: "Unable to display current owner." and when I try to click "Change" to change the owner to myself, the same window as when I clicked "Continue" appears.

This is very frustrating.

I am not sure if a virus got to this but at this point I don't care.  The problem is when I use the command: net

install anything because her account is not a admin account.  When I go into safe mode he Administrator account is disabled.  I see the account under net users but no matter what technique I use to enable it or reset password it comes back as Access
Denied.  Any ideas?

A:net user administrator /active:yes ACCESS DENIED

I've had a look at this, and whilst it is true that you can access the built-in Administrator account (even if it is disabled) from Safe Mode, you can only do so if there is no other administrative account active on your system. Unfortunately, a forgotten
password still means that the administrative account is still there and active, only that you don't have access to it.

Hi all,

First post so apologies for sharing the burden. I am running a Win Server 2008 R2. One of my users informed me that he could not access a couple of folders within the server. Upon checking, I found out that even I do not have access to the folder, even in administrator account. Whenever I try to open it, it says 'you don't currently have permission to view this folder. Click continue to permanently get access to this folder.' so I clicked Continue.

It comes out with another popup that says 'You have been denied permission to access this folder. To gain access to this folder, you need to use the security tab. The security tab part is clickable so I did.

It shows the folder properties > Security with a message of 'You do not have permission to view or edit this object's permission settings.' I clicked the Advanced tab > Owner -> Edit button. Checked the Replace owner or subcontainers and objects. I can see the Administrators as a choice. I even tried keying in an individual user. After that, I clicked 3 subsequent OKs.

Nothing happened. Kinda stumped on this. I did read some help from here earlier but it couldn't work. I can't just 'restart' this as its a running server. Halp pls.

Well I ran norton and did a full system scan and ended up with

did repairs to everything along with disk framentation and disk integrity
scan, everything says okay, but I keep having problems with this

A:Cannot Access My Computer My Documents Or File Search

I had a similar problem once before but in my case there was a read error on the hard drive that was causing the problem. Same story- I clicked on my computer and it gave some error about Explorer, and I got the same from search etc. just like you. To fix this one you might have to reinstall windows, but I would back up your files first. You might have to slave your hard drive to another computer to do that or move the files off to a USB drive or something. In my case I didn't have another computer to slave the files to, but I did have an external hard drive and a copy of BART PE. I was able to use the file manager program in BART PE to copy and paste all my files onto an external USB drive. Then I bought a new hard drive (because I knew the one in question had read errors on it) and formatted and installed windows on it. If your problem is just caused by a virus you might get away with doing Windows repair with the XP CD, or you might have to repave it (format and reinstall).

So today I was working on my computer, my norton antivirus expired and so I bought a new one. Well it wouldn't renew my subscription so I read on a website that you need to clear norton out of your registry. So I followed the directions and ever since I did that when I open a webpage it goes to a screen that says:

ERROR

The requested URL could not be retrieved
-----------------------------------------------

The following error was encountered:

- Cache Access Denied

Access control configuration prevents this request.

On top of that I get a similar message when I try to run live update. I have the computer hooked up to a linksys router with high speed internet. Please help.

Mike

A:Messed up computer and cannot access internet, page says cache access denied

Hmm, that's a good one. Try reinstalling IE or Firefox, whatever internet software you use. You might have inadvertently deleted an application cache file which the application needs.

Only other thing to do is boot into safe mode and select last know good boot.

Please help me I am about to pull out my hair out.  Warring if you are reading this and want to try it to fix your permission problems do not follow the directions below.  I do not suggest it at all!!!

My hard drive started to fail on my Dell XPS computer running Windows 7 Home Premium.  Dell sent me a new hard drive under warranty.  I was able to connect an external drive to my old drive and copy the items that I wanted.  Except my 7GB Outlook PST file which I really wanted.  It appears to be damaged and I was trying some different things to try to repair it (that is a long story).  If I ever get past this hump I still need PST help too.

So here is what I did.  Please stick with me I know it is long.

1.  After backing up the files from the old drive I physically removed it from the system.

2.  I hooked up the new drive to my system and loaded all of the programs on it that I needed.

3.  I attached the old drive and the new drive to the system to see if I could open/repair the Outlook PST file that was on the old drive using the new drive’s copy of Outlook.

4.  I realized I didn't have permission to access the files on the old drive that I wanted so I did a lot of reading on Google.  I honestly can't believe that Microsoft made this sooooo impossible.

5.  I found that I could run F:\Users>TAKEOWN /F F:\Users\Administrator\ /R /D Y (All re... Read more

A:Windows 7 home premium file permission issues

Try following these steps to take ownership of the entire hard drive (scroll down to the first reply): http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/permission-are-mesed-up-need-help-to-fix-it/6146ccc1-c5a6-4e04-a674-9a7a13b08de3

If that doesn't work, you may have to reinstall the operating system on the new drive.

As for the .pst issue, when pst files get that large they are prone to become damaged or corrupt. If you can sort out the permissions issue, try these steps to repair the pst file: http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/272227

Hi folks,

I am the administrator of my small business network. We are using a Buffalo TeraStation for file sharing among our group of 5 users. One of our users has abruptly lost the permission to edit adobe PDF files stored on the NAS device. She is blocked from saving PDF files after editing them and given a read-only type of notice. She only receives this when editing Adobe PDF files. Word docs and other files work perfectly. I checked her permissions on the NAS admin console and they are correct. The issue is only with files accessed from her PC, and it only happens when she opens a file on the NAS device, not locally. Any ideas?

Help! This is killing our productivity! Thanks!

Pat

My account is the only administrator account and I can't delete this .tmp file, I can't upload it to virustotal.com it says it is too small, what should I do?

A:Why can't I delete one .tmp file, it says i need to be an administrator.

Hi, if you can confirm that you do not need that file, maybe you could try any of the following two approaches:

1. Run cmd.exe as administrator. Run the following command:

Code:
del /F D:\test.txt
Please replace "D:\test.txt" with the full path of the file that you want to delete.

2. Using msconfig.exe to boot into the Safe Mode. Try to delete that file in the Safe Mode.

Hi, is the ownership of a file on my system stored in some NTFS-database, or is it a property of a file which can be read outside of my machine (for instance: if I email a file to somebody else can they read the file in such a way that they can see it is owned by my user-account)? I am not talking about the metadata of MS Office files, rather about mp3's, images and so on. Regards, siso

A:File ownership: extractable from file outside my computer?

NTFS ownership is stored in the MFT entry of the file. This information is not stored within the file itself and cannot be read outside the computer.

I have a batch file that runs on start-up that prompts the user for the name of the laptop (each laptop has a unique ID). The WMIC command is called to rename the computer and user account to whatever the name of the laptop happens to be. It then maps a
network drive to read from a text file which looks up which Win7 CD Key it should use, and then runs slmgr.vbs -ipk and -ato.
The current user account is an "Administrator" but when running the WMIC or SLMGR.VBS commands, it fails because it's not the Administrator.
I have tried placing the script into the Logon/Logoff policy but the script didn't even run when doing that. I've tried using Schedule Tasks, but because of the username and computer name changes, that causes errors. I've tried adding the script to HKEY_CU\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers\ and setting the RUNASADMIN flag but that also didn't work.
How do I force the command prompt window to run as an administrator and then execute the script?

A:Need to run batch file on start-up as Administrator

Right click on Shortcut>Properties>Shortcut Tab>Advanced>Check 'Run as administrator' worked good enough for me.

You need to have the same username on both the Win98 and XP. And you obviously have to enable file sharing on the XP firewall.

Someone's schoolwork again?

These are suffix rules and show what make is supposed to do when it is requested to process a source ending with .c and a target ending with .a for example.

Access is denied.

Can anyone please help me fix this so I can enter the new license code.Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

I'd try downloading/installing it again...your package may be damaged.
