Exactly. In most professional leagues, you do enough to get in the post-season. Then turn it on in the playoffs.

I mean, they still have tournament-style tournaments in Europe. Winning the league title (the "regular season" if you will) is just one of three trophies up for grabs every season, with the domestic cup (in England, it's the FA Cup, Spain La Copa Del Rey), and the continental cup (Champions League in Europe) both being very important as well.
