Who do you guys see as potential CB's we may go after in Summer?

Stones --> I think he gets overpaid and goes to City.

Marquinhos --> Feel like he will go to Barca.

Laporte

Mustafi

Hummels --> Bayern

Varane

Not pretending to be an expert on the matter but from a few games I've seen Koulibaly looks great and I've heard some rave reviews. Could be a good, less obvious option. Interested to hear others opinions though who may be more knowledgable.

When he played for Genk he always came across as a very solid, level-headed CB. He's also doing quite well at Napoli, but I haven't seen much Serie A this season so I can't really judge about that, but I remember one newspaper claiming he's the best CB in Serie A atm.

He wouldn't be a big marquee signing like all others, but I rate him and he would be available for something around €20-25 million I think. Altough I don't think he's on the same level as someone like Marquinhos or Smalling, who I would prefer over him.

I genuinely rate Koulibaly higher than every single one of these players listed. He is an excellent defender. I've seen him a couple times for Napoli this season, every time he's impressed. Not good on the ball, but he is excellent at man marking, he would fix our problem dealing with crosses, and he is a no nonsense kind of player. I would rather see us go for him than any of these overhyped players.

Stones --> I don't think he's going to City, but, regardless, he's extremely poor defensively and overpriced. Nothing close to the £40 million Chelsea offered for him.

Marquinhos --> Most realistic option, in my opinion. We need to outbid Barcelona. He's spoken highly of the PL, so hopefully he is willing to playing for us.

Laporte --> He's going to City, according to Di Marzio

Mustafi --> Good shout, but would prefer Marquinhos

Hummels --> Bayern

Varane --> Don't see RM selling him. Pepe and Ramos are aging, and he is their successor.

If I could sign any CB in the world right now, it would be Jose Maria Gimenez from Atletico. He's talented with a very bright future, but don't see him leaving anytime soon. He's comfortable playing alongside Godin and under Simeone.

Jose Maria Gimenez VERY underrated player, in my opinion he is better than Laporte, Mustafi and Marquinhos and i think he is younger than all of them.but like you said i also don't think he will leave Atletico right now, he is still developing nicely under Simeone and his compatriot Godin and their team is doing wonderful in the Champions league the is no reason to leave.

I think people are being way too harsh on Stones. Yes if you buy him you're buying potential but he's a top talent. I also believe a lot of his mistakes are down to Martinez's really poor coaching. I think under LVG or Mourinho he would be amazing.

i like eric bailly versatile can play both cb rb and lb i feel like if we get mou in he can turn him in to a world class defender

only watched him in europa league for villareal he's pretty fast and strong and good defensively but he has a lack of focus at some points of the game. However, he has an insane motor for his size he's 1.87m. If he can maintain his concentration im sure he'll reach a top level not many people seem to rate or even talk about him but at 21 i think he has a long way to improve still with the right coach hopefully mou he will talked about in the same regard as most of the young cb listed above

A few people understandably doubting Stones in this thread but I personally think he has incredible potential under a manager who really knows how to defend - certainly not Martinez's forte.

Whether its LVG or Mou in charge next season, I think Stones would really bloom.

I don't think Stones is [currently] as good as the English press claim he is (nor as bad), but he certainly holds promise and I think it's Man United's duty to get him. The best English players should develop under our wing, not any other English club. At least, that's the way it was throughout a quarter of a century (and probably half a century, if we arbitrarily include Sir Matt Busby's time).

I'd take any of Laporte,Varane or Marquinhos in that order. If City don't get CL, I think all bets are off on players Pep wants.

Since our current pair of CB is on a good form, I hope we buy one for the future to make a pairing with Fosu Mensah. Someone like Rugani or Ginter would be perfect. They're the Martial version of CB. Talented, good with the ball, also very calm and composed. Would be a great combination with Fosu Mensah's power and aggression.

Marquinhos - Great young CB, not getting gametime over Silva and Luiz but as you said has been linked to Barca for ages.

Stones - Not the preferred option but also not as bad as people think. I'd take him personally. Also Laporte is off to City so that rules out Stones to City and Laporte to us.

Laporte - City

Hummels - Bayern

Varane - Would be great but not possible

Koulibaly, Maximovic and Mustafi - Smaller names than the other players mentioned. Can't say myself if they are as good as the other players mentioned because I don't know all that much about them

Why not Virgil van Dijk? He's only 24 and he's taken to the premier league like a duck to water. He's physical, good on the ball and I can see him peaking all over the place in the next few years with the right coaching.

Every single one of those defenders is overrated bar Marquinhos. I don't want to see us going after any one of them including him. There are better cheaper options in the market.
