/u/thisismy_sfw just pointed out that this is a photoshop from Michael Craig Martin's early work in the 1970's. It turns out they are not actually filled with coloured liquid, so this really has nothing going for it it's just triggering.

the water level should be a horizontal line straight across, but it looks like it tilts upward from left to right-- is the photo crooked, or is that an optical illusion?

edit: definitely crooked photo-- scroll down until the top of the liquid lines up with the top of the window-- there's more air above the red bottles than there is above the violet bottles

I'm not. whoever colorized it didn't do a good job, the jump between green and blue is too large, and the 2 bottles at either ends are almost the exact same hue.

They probably punched numbers in for rainbow colours in a colour picker, but didn't realize that it doesn't actually translate to even steps.

Edit: would bottles with less liquid evaporate faster than bottles with more liquid?

Should evaporate roughly the same as I think it depends primarily on the exposed surface area of the water. Eg the top half of a cylindrical glass should evaporate at the same rate as the bottom half. There might be slight differences due to the total mass of water absorbing temperature differently or something, but assuming a constant temperature my guess is that there'd be virtually no difference.

I think this is true, and that bottles 1-7 will evaporate at the same rate and the rest of them progressively slower rates. But the difference between the first bottle and the last bottle surface area looks to be about 2:1 ratio, so the first bottle should evaporate twice as fast, or something like that.

I think if the bottles are the same size and the liquid is the same they should evaporate the same. The bottles with less liquid my look like it's evaporating quicker because there is less altogether so changes are easier to perceive.

Yeah it's off in quite a few ways. The shelf is not aligned with the brackets (shifted more to the right), the bottles are not placed symmetrically on the shelf (left bracket lands between 1 and 2, last bracket lands on 3rd from the end), and the centre of gravity has got to be rather close to the right support entirely.

In fact, if you adjusted the proportions a bit this might be able to be balanced after removing the left support entirely.

This is a nice photo and one of the things I like about it is that the horizontal line of water sort of matches where the shelf should have been. However, as aesthetically pleasing as this is and as a response to the title of this post, it's personally giving me a little bit of anxiety due to the lopsidedness and opened bottles, but thanks for the share nonetheless! It's a very cool decoration.
