I know i would be pissed if i broke my leg then had to pay for it out of my own pocket

May I ask why?

[–]Captain_Hampockets 4ポイント5ポイント  (18子コメント)

Because he is used to having the State pay for it, and his taxes have supported that policy.

Alright. I guess I was just confused by that comment. As an american, if I broke my leg, I'd expect to pay for it. I certainly wouldn't expect everyone else to pay for my mistake.

Everyone pays. Not everyone else. It's part of taxes in countries that have socialized medicine.

I stand corrected. I wouldn't expect everyone to have to pay for my mistake.

Like all those people who mistakenly got cancer?

What do you mean?

You were implying getting sick/hurt is the fault of the sick or injured person.

...not really. My point is that I don't want to coerce people into paying for something that isn't their fault. Anything no-fault is what it is -- a part of life.

the point of socialized medicine is to raise the standard of living for all people. so that an uncontrollable accident does not take a person out financially.

Then why even live in a fucking country? It's not your neighbour's fault you need clean water and roads to drive on.

Why? Why not promote a healthier society for all, those who can and can't afford it? What if you got an illness you couldn't afford to treat, that's not your fault, but why not have other people support you financially through that because I'm the end it is better for us as a society to make life better.

Who says it was a mistake? How about being run over by an uninsured driver? Does that guy deserve to pay for his mistake of walking down the sidewalk? How about congenital heart defects? Cancer? Are those patients also paying for their mistakes?

I didn't mean to place emphasis on mistake as being "my fault". I don't expect other people to pay for problems they didn't cause.

If I have a congenital birth defect, that's my cross to bear. No one else did that to me, so I can't coerce them into paying for it. Same basic argument applies to all your examples except the uninsured that driver. That irresponsible fucker's gonna pay.

The point is everyone pays, and through that no individual is literally destroyed financially due to circumstances beyond their control and everyone can access the care they need.

I guess in some ways that makes sense, but I feel it should be opt-in. You know, like voluntary health insurance. You want to be insured against medical debt, you pay into the system. If not, no one will take your money, but it's your risk.

not just your risk, but yours and the hospitals that will undoubtedly treat you in the case of an emergency.

Do you also think that you people who live in nice neighbourhoods shouldn't have to pay for the police, since they are less likely to be a victim of crime? Or paying for the fire service should be opt-in, so that people who are more careful with their houses don't have to pay for all those other irresponsible fires? Fuck it, people who don't have children shouldn't have to pay so that other peoples kids get educated, right? And screw paying for any road that you don't drive on. Other people like going to national parks, but you don't, so fuck paying for park services and conservation. And you hate books, so anyone who wants to read should just buy books off Amazon so you can stop paying for the damn libraries.

The fact is that in the US you live in a country where most public services are socialized. I find it really mind-boggling that there are so many people like you who feel that healthcare should not be one of those. Health problems affect everyone eventually, and it's a much bigger certainty than needing to use any of those other services that you happily pay for others to also use.

What if it's not your mistake? What if a ladder was poorly designed? What if you're hit by a car and you're not at fault? Your post is overly simplistic.

He said "that's my fault" but he meant "that's my problem."
