I live in Israel, and I get asked what I think about the United States.

I always pause...

I am proud to be an American not because of our ideals, but because of what we do. We are the only civilization that looked at the sky, then those around us, and said, we can go there.

And we did.

This picture touches me, because only Americans have thus far dared to walk on the faces of Gods.

Americans are the only race of people who looked at the mother earth and said, we can do more.

and then other Americans looked at what they did, and said humbly, we can do better.

We held the keys that unlocked everything mankind will ever do. Few civilizations can claim that, and see their work spread before them. From physics to the internet to electricity.

In 3,000 years from now, people will still remember our civilization for having dared to achieve what was thought impossible.

And scarce a day goes by where I don't ask myself- what can I do, actually do, to realize this?

This picture is beautifully summed up because it is things that remind me that it's ok to be human- because sometimes we do things that give our species value.
