Funny you would bring that up.
A lot of homeless people die in condemned buildings that are demolished. A lot of homeless people live in abandoned buildings and are very territorial. Even the safest neighborhood has an underbelly.
No one checks for bums first, if you miss the signs you die. Happens more in tacoma washington than anywhere else I can think of but this is ad hominem information based on stories I've heard while homeless. I only know of one person that I've met being killed in a demolition.

I've explored many buildings, my favorite was an old steel factory with an attached infirmary.
It was so large it even had a power plant attached to it. Lots of copper wire salvaged from that location, it even paid the mortgage one month.
I never took any photos, I would walk into the infirmary from a stairwell with a kicked in door and then make my way to the third floor where the windows opened to the roof.
Quick jaunt across the roof to the power station and climbed a ladder and then down through an open hatch.
So many rooms and underground passageways, it was an urbex wet dream.

As far as origins well raiding has a longtime tradition going all the way back at least to the time when halfchan had a dozen or more boards. As far as this particular strain, it seems to be mostly 12yb& from halfchan & disenfranchised emigrants out of fullchan moving to other smaller chans over the past year or so. A loose confederation used to regularly attempt coordination on /intl/ but that appears to have mostly ceased. There is some continuation going on at freech.
I imagine that the continuing lack of success with the project will eventually lead to it's effective demise. I think it likely that Jim will be the one to finally kill 8chan personally.
