Reminds me of the time I played with my Thomas the Tank Engine wooden railway and my plastic army men at the same time. War came to Sodor that day...

First there were skirmishes at the Saw Mill. Then the Reds took Arlesburgh, then the Blues kicked them out, nearly leveling the city in the process. Then tactical nukes were used on the Misty island.

And then Mr.Sir Topham Hatt got cross and kicked all soldiers out of the island.

Mr. Topham Hatt

You mean 'the Fat Controller'

Apparently they changed it. Heathens.

Nope. That was always his real name, and "the fat controller" was more of an affectionate nickname.

I'd not be surprised if they didn't call him that any more though in the newer ones though, cos yknow, #fatshaming and all that.

Mister? This was before he earned his OBE?

I did the same as a kid. Trains were forced to support the military for transporting troops and equipment to the front lines.

Pretty sure Thomas has PTSD now.

I mean, at least you'll know what they're talking about...

    Like panzerkampfwagen.

    Panzer means mail, or armor.

    Kampf means struggle or fight.

Wagen means cart, carriage, moving thing I guess.

So then you get armored fight car, or what we call a tank.

They used it. According to Wikipedia it saw action during the siege of Leningrad.

The magazine was sited 30 metres under the sea with at least 10 metres of concrete protection. After nine shells were fired, the magazine was ruined and one of the boats in the bay sunk

And they wanted to put that thing on an equally large tank.

Giant artillery makes for decent target practise for bombers though. RIP Gustav

They did use Gustav. It was decommissioned after like a year. To give an idea of how difficult it was to use throughout a year of "use" it only fired 300 shells in combat.

They also had to literally build new railroads just for it to go anywhere.

And by the end of those 300 shells. It already needed a new barrel. I would have loved some HD video of this thing in action. I can't imagine the sound it made.

The shells wore down the barrel so much they literally had the wear nailed down and had numbered shells to be fired in sequence to keep the muzzle velocity the same

I don't think HD video existed.

Short of 4k, film is generally comparable to HD or better, though the actual quality of the imagine will depend a lot on the camera and camera man.

Eh, the Germans would've been better off using those railroads it needed to supply the Wehrmacht winter clothes.

What's this, what you just now saying to me, my good friend ?! I'll know that I finished in my class for conflict resolution than Best and was involved in several friendly discussions, which I have about 300 confirmed friends you. I am trained in polite discussion and have a top mediator in my entire neighborhood! You are worth more to me than just another destination. I hope we will be able to lead a friendship, as she has never been on earth. Do not you think that you could hurt the feelings of others, if you say something in the inner power? Think about it, friend. While we are talking I contact my good friends from all over Germany, which help me to make your billing address locate, so you prepare yourself better on the greeting cards that friend. The greeting cards will help you against your hate. You should rejoice on it, friend. I could at any time, anywhere, be there for you and could calm down in more than 700 species, and only with my chess set. I am not only excessively trained in conflict resolution, but also have also access to a whole group of friends and I will use them to their full potential, to begin our new friendship. If you had only known what pleasantries and flirtations will draw your comment to yourself, then maybe you'd sooner your hand out stretched. But you could not, you did not, and now we will close this new friendship, you wonderful and unique person. I'll give you gifts and you'll have trouble possibly because ever come along. You live at last, friend.

Say what you want about Hitler, but Nazi Germany built some cool shit.

      [–]PM_me_Venn_diagrams 15ポイント16ポイント  (5子コメント)

Germany still makes cool shit. They export around $18,000 per person every year, four times what the US does per person, and 16 times what the Chinese export per person.

Their school system even revolves around skilled labor instead of degrees.

Some of the smaller EU nations somehow managed to beat that. Those are some motivated little countries, right there. Especially Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

There is probably a reason the highest scoring tank commander in history was a young 20 something year old auto factory worker raised in Czechoslovakia.

Only country (now countries) the Germans turn to when they need even harder working workers than their own.

Is that the Lost Planet 2 Railway gun?

Well, they've been saying that Thomas the Tank Engine is Fascist propaganda for years! So is this just the logical conclusion?

      http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/culturebox/2011/07/thomas_the_imperialist_tank_engine.2.html

But wait: Thomas espouses top-down leadership, is male-dominated, punishes dissent, and is uninterested in the mushy sensitivity of its PBS counterparts. (Thomas and his "friends" often "tease" like this: " 'Wake up lazy bones! Do some hard work for a change!") Its innate conservatism is as obvious as the liberalism of cooperative, solar-panel-building Bob the Builderand his band of hippie hammer-lovers. Given charges that Thomas is anti - Semitic and that Sodor is a fascist paradise, Wilton's assessment is mild. Obviously, it's foolish to claim that Thomas is a fascist. He and his friends are clearly imperialists.

      Who....who analyze's kid's shows this much?

      It's anthropomorphic trains. That's it.

Actually can be quite important to analyze kids shows. Nearly every story we telling are culture is morality play. Stories, especially the stories we tell our children, are one of the primary ways that we spread are values within a culture, change your values within a culture, and suppress certain values within a culture.

Values like bravery, self sacrifice, hard work, care for the environment, respect for elders, standing up to bullies, charity, tolerance of those who are different, learning from those who are different, all of these things and many more our taught to children through stories.

And those same values, and many others, and in some cases contradicting one another, are reinforced or condemned in the stories that adults enjoy joy as well.
