20' The game has been camped around the Everton box and we're passing it around well and playing good balls through! Martial is played through the defence but his shot is way too high and the chance is wasted!

30' The game has slowed down and Everton have gotten more into it. De Gea with a few easy saves to make but we're still waiting for a breakthrough.

53' The volume hasn't dropped at all in Wembley and there's been good interplay from United, like the end of the first half. Lingard has the ball come to him on the edge of the box from a backheel but he slices his shot well wide.

Possibly one of the best attacking halves we've played in quite a while, and we take a well deserved lead into halftime.

  • Much of our successful attacking is coming from our fluidity in movement up top. The forwards, rather than sticking to the touchlines, have mixed it up and often come inside, overloading Gibson in between defence and midfield, and also allowing the full backs to push on and provide the width vacacted by the wide men. The ability for Martial to cover for Rashford up front has also allowed the latter to drift wide and overload a full back or drag a centre back out wide, opening up space through the middle for the likes of Rooney, Fellaini, Martial or Lingard to charge into the gap between the Everton defence.

  • Movement has also been evident in the midfield, with Rooney, Fellaini, Lingard and Martial offering for the ball from Carrick and the centre halves to bring it out from the defensive line. Once the play has moved into our half, Carrick has moved up and joined Rooney in distributing the ball, with Fellaini moving forward as a pseudo-forward, using his physicality to provide a finish at the near post or bring the ball down at the back post.

  • Defensively, we have done well for the most part, although we've have had moments of looking troubled against Lukaku. Our defensive efforts have been helped from the front as soon as we lose the ball, when we've looked to press Everton high up the pitch. I feel we need to continue this and not allow the likes of Stones, Jagielka and Gibson (playing in the role Barry has often played for Everton in the past few seasons) to have time to distribute the ball out wide or to aim a ball to Lukaku - Smalling and Blind are allowed a lot more margin for error when the ball is booted up the pitch, rather than lofted and directed into Lukaku. When we pressure the out ball to be played early from very deep, Everton have also been much too deep to support Lukaku, leaving him isolated and allowing our midfielders to also get back and pressure him.

  • In the second half overall, we really need to keep attacking on the left side. Besic is looking very uncomfortable against the likes of Rashford and Martial, as highlighted by the goal. We could make the game a done deal early on if we continue playing with the momentum we had in the half.

Carrick's been getting the same hate since 2006 "not mobile, doesn't tackle hard enough, sideways passes" and he's been the centrepiece of this club's most successful period of all time.

Even in a post Xavi world people really don't appreciate a metronome.

Any Xavi highlights will show a handful of average through balls. That was not his thing. many midfielders were more dangerous playing those danger balls.

Every top possession system needs a guy like Carrick to pull the strings and every generation only has a handful of players good enough to play that role at the highest level.

One of our best halves of the season, though we should really have capitalised with 2-3 goals and still lucky not to concede.

Young pacey forwards cutting defences open, this is what we want for United isn't it? Great to see, just need to be more clinical.

Everton look lethargic, Besic is poor at full back, Jagielka's playing on one leg, Stones is off with the fairies at times.

Only change I'd consider making now is Valencia for TFM, he's been pretty timid and wasted a lot of passes, got caught out of position once or twice and lucky Baines at his age has lost his pace. On the other hand Valencia came back in fantastic form and disregarding fitness deserved to start.

LVG's main stamp on this squad will be the youth. But, if he can finally get Rooney playing the deep role well, it could be a massive contribution to United moving forward. Rooney no longer has the pace, but is an incredible passer of the ball. If LVG can get him to master the attacking midfield/playmaker role, he's handing his successor one hell of a weapon.

Side note: The youngsters are doing so much better with LvG's instructions. They have the hunger and the naivety to follow their instructions to a tee. I can absolutely see next year being a success if we keep LvG even though he gets all of the hate. I can see the same thing coming through that he built at Ajax, Barca and AZ. It's percolating.
