Short, heavy set woman at the magistrate says, "you've been charged with assault on a female." I turn my head and see two older ladies looking at me like I am a monster...

...and I never laid my hand on her. I never hit her, despite having a million good reasons to. All that shame I felt over something I didn't even do...

In common law assault doesn't require you to lay your hands on the victim. Assault is an attempt to harm, battery is the success in that attempt. That's why you often hear "assault and battery." Sometimes you can get charged with assault for making someone apprehensive that you will hurt them, or making them feel imminently threatened.

That's only in civil court in common law. In criminal court there is no such distinction.
