Jorge Mendes, the super-agent who represents José Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo, is one of a number of the game’s most powerful representatives hoping to convince Marcus Rashford, the Manchester United striker, that they are best placed to guide him through his career.

The 18-year-old made his debut for United only on February 25, after being called up as a stand-in for Anthony Martial, but has emerged over the past two months as one of the brightest prospects in Europe. He has scored seven goals in 13 games in all competitions, which has prompted calls for Roy Hodgson, the England manager,
