Jose Mourinho latest: Former Chelsea manager has not held talks with PSG as he still wants Manchester United job

Jose Mourinho has not held talks with Paris Saint-Germain after the French league champions made an approach to his agent, with the former Chelsea manager still determined to land the Manchester United job should Louis van Gaal leave this summer.

PSG contacted Mourinho’s agent, Jorge Mendes, earlier this month to discuss the Portuguese’s future and offer him the chance to replace current head coach Laurent Blanc following their Champions League exit at the hands of Manchester City.

With PSG’s Qatari owners unhappy with the progress made in Europe under Blanc, it was reported by Sky Sports that Mourinho’s agent had received an official offer to take charge of the Parisians from the start of next season.

ade any contact with PSG’s owners despite being friends with club owner Nasser Al-Khelaifi. It’s added that Mendes has spoken with United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward again this week with Mourinho said to have “guaranteed” to close friends that he will be the United manager next season.

The speculation over Mourinho’s future comes at a time when Van Gaal is fighting for his future, with a top four Premier League finish and an FA Cup success still possible. United face Everton in the FA Cup semi-finals this weekend knowing they can end their 12-year Cup drought with victory, while last night’s 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace leaves them just one point off fourth-placed Arsenal – who play their game in hand against West Brom tonight.

    Mourinho’s history with Mata is well documented. He authorised the midfielder’s departure from Chelsea to Manchester United after regularly leaving him out of his starting line-up during the first half of the 2013/14 season. The Spanish technician simply did not do the dirty defensive work that Mourinho demands from his charges and was duly moved on. The same could happen next season at Old Trafford.

    A player whose time at Old Trafford may be up, regardless of whether a new manager arrives or not. The Ecuadorian has been out of contention since suffering a foot injury in October but his shaky performances at full-back earlier in the season did little to inspire confidence. Versatility and two years remaining on his current deal may save him but otherwise, it looks bleak.

It’s reported that Van Gaal is unhappy with United’s lack of progress in the transfer market ahead of the summer, having seen the club press on with their plans at this stage last season. One possible explanation is that Van Gaal has spent over £250m since he replaced David Moyes in 2014.

However, it has also been claimed that it is a sign of the uncertainty surrounding Van Gaal’s future, with the club unwilling to sign off on any of the Dutchman’s transfer targets while his job remains in the balance.
