Just wondering how he's fared.

I think he's better than we give him credit. his positioning is ace he gets stuck in and does the dirty work and can carry the defensive duties while a more attacking player sitting opposite him can drive the play. and lately he has been pushing up the pitch too.

you're kidding? he dives into tackles with total disregard for positioning. if anything i'd say that's his biggest weakness.

I'm confused with how this sub rates player's positioning. How can a DM for United, in a 4-3-3 have positioning as his biggest weakness?

It doesn't make sense, if van Gaal had the same thesis Blind would've played dm, Rojo at CB and there would be no lack or positional awareness to exploit.

But Schneiderlin played DM well and was at the right places to ease pressure off the defence. It's not nonsense nor coincidence to see that United concede less and win more with him in MF. To me the only player to make a more positive defensive contribution yesterday was Smalling.

The best description I can come up with for him would be solid if unspectacular. Our entire midfield has had trouble linking from the defence to attack. But he generally handles his defensive duties well and does what is required of him as a defensive midfielder.

I think he's been pretty unlucky with us to be honest.

I'll give you an example of what I mean - during the recent match against Spurs I thought he had a great first half. Did a lot of dirty work, breaking up play etc and was flipping passes around the park. Second half he was ok - didn't have a huge amount to do that would catch the eye. Then they scored 3 times and no positives could be found by anyone.

Let's look at another match; City. First half he wasn't amazing but he did a job and wasn't helped out by having a static midfielder like Carrick next to him (which really limited his outball as it wasn't difficult for City to pressure his options). Herrera comes on, much better performance from him.

Recently we've seen examples of his passing too (eg against Everton).

All in all I'm happy with him - I don't think he's ever going to be a Busquets level player but I think he's a good player if played with the right players in the right system and not in a defensive, slow system alongside Carrick.

Some will point you in the direction of stats, where we have a much higher win % with Morgan.

But watching each week, he is a decent player but nothing more. Never really dominated a game, never put in a man of the match performance (he was quite good vs everton last year though), just 1 goal and 1 assist, occasionally makes a nice pass.

Would you say he's a United quality backup/rotation? Seems like the general consensus is that he's been decent but not set the world alight.

I have no issues with him being given a peripheral squad role but we need significantly better players to be brought in for our central midfield positions.

It's sad that all our midfielders are basically squad players. All that money wasted when we could have pursued better players for less. To be fair though, Morgan did have an amazing season for Southampton last season.

so did lallana. sometimes shining for an upper midtable team doesn't translate to being good enough for a better team.

especially when you're a dm playing in an ultra compact, defensive system next to another massive dm. all these things magnify your strengths and totally hide your weaknesses.

more than mobile i want technically capable ones. xabi/busi/xavi was one of the least mobile midfields ive ever seen but spain absolutely dominated the middle of the pitch.

i want us to be able to pass our way out of a heavy press without panicking.

Haha we have only Schweinsteiger capable of doing that right now and hes going to be done in a year or two if hes not already done.

Effectively we have zero mids capable of playing a high quality possession system. Its a pipedream right now.

I think Blind can do it, most certainly after his experience at CB and doing a decent job there. I see a lot of people who want a destroyer or defensive beast on single pivot which is totally off in my opinion. Single pivot needs to be technical, positionally sublime and superior distribution. You need destroyers in front of the single pivot.

What I meant was, say, having Kante as a starter and then playing Schneiderlin occasionally as rotation. Or is he not even that good?

both are the wrong profile of player for the system really.

i get kante's work ethic is really useful but matuidi does the same with a lot more technical ability.

kante's an upgrade on morgan but you really need even better than that.

look at someone like koke who presses like a maniac but then he has outrageous technical ability too.

True, but (correct me if I'm wrong) I think Koke is more a player who surges up the pitch quite a bit rather than sitting at the base of midfield. Same for Kante, really, so he was a bad example.

just talking about central midfielders.

saf never played a holding midfielder/destroyer type. i dont think its really necessary unless you have an outrageous all out attack style and even then its really just a patch for an imbalanced midfield or team lazy/bad at pressing as a unit.

Yeah, ideally a more balanced style of player would be used but even the likes of Alonso stay at the base of midfield and read the game very well defensively.

That said, as far as patches go, Bayern's Martinez-Schweinsteiger midfield wasn't half bad.

Hard to say really. I think he has a place if he has good players around him but i wouldn't be so sad or suprised if we sold him in a few seasons

Like it or not he is one of our most consistent midfielders so far. I can't understand why most of our fans expect from him to play like Carrick or Scholes did. He is doing a different job for the team, defensive stability especially next season with Shaw back and a new CB in Rojo place. The team needs balance put some more attacking midfielders with more class in front of him and let them roll. Ffs even Rooney played better at midfield compared to the likes Fellaini,Herrera,Carrick(I'm not a prick he is terrible this season),Mata. On the other hand defensively we are quite solid and Morgan had some good performances in his first season. Our attack needs some boost JAMES easy option also trust LVG eye for Renato.

From what I remember, he was playing very well during the early parts of the season. Did he drop off? Or was it just a case of fans overrating him in the beginning because he was a new signing?

Any remotely attractive player gets the whole gushing fan girl treatment. Stick Diego Costa's face on him and watch half of his supporters wither away.

He's been thoroughly mediocre in a system designed to get the most out of him.

Anyone who attacks us bypasses the man with ease and he has absolutely no chance of growing into a deep lying playmaker role. He just does not have the technical ability to ever be a Xabi, Pirlo, Carrick, Verratti, Modric etc. esque figure.

If he's just going to be a destroyer type holding midfielder there's about 5 players in the French NT alone ahead of him in the pecking order, maybe 6 or 7 if we're being a bit more objective.

Yeah, I get that van Gaal's system is based on low risk and defensive pragmatism, so I figured a guy like Schneiderlin would thrive in it. Do you think he's suffered from not having a Wanyama type of player next to him?

Everyone here thinks Schneiderlin was a crunching tackle type of DM that bossed the midfield. In reality he was a limited box to box player that recycled possession really well in Saints' midfield whilst also racking up both decent defensive and offensive stats.

He is severely lacking someone like Wanyama and he should be playing box to box in a 4-3-3 not the key DM role in a 4-2-3-1.

Well since you're asking on a United sub it's probably expected that you've watched games unless you support another team and just wonders how he has been (which you didn't say in your OP). I guess you're French and support another team and wonder if he's good enough for France. Probably not. I doubt he'll get any playtime. Pogba, Matuidi and Kante is clearly your best midfield. Diarra should also be in front of Schneiderlin in the pecking order.
