About this project
Welcome
Thanks for looking at my campaign. I am very excited about this project. It will be the first major opportunity to showcase my own original music to the wider world. I have a number of independent radio stations and performance venues who will promote my music once the project is complete.
This Campaign
Creating music is fun but the production process can be a long, lonely and expensive path. I have chosen to run this kickstarter campaign to promote my music and to gain some moral and financial support for my second CD. This CD will be used as a demo, sold at gigs and submitted to radio stations for airplay. I hope that you enjoy the music I give you, that you subscribe to my webpage www.steveschwartzguitar.com that you listen to my music regularly and that you encourage your friends to do the same.
Supporter Levels and Rewards
You can choose between 5 supporter levels. Each level has a different minimum cost and each offers different rewards. For as little as $2.00 you can pre order a single track download and for a minimum of $500 you can book a live performance of all 6 tracks. Just click the reward that suits, follow the onscreen instructions and enter the level of funding you want to put into the campaign. You will only be charged once the kick starter campaign is successfully completed. All backers will be entitled to member only access to my website and will receive regular project updates. Your chosen reward will be delivered once the project is complete.
The Music
My musical influences are wide and varied and come from most musical genres including classical, pop, folk, blues, rock and metal. My own music reflects this wide range of influences and I am guided by the sounds that I enjoy playing, hearing and that I sharing. The original track "Sunday Noodles " shown above is one of the heavier tracks I have recorded. Some of my other tracks are far more gentle and melodic. Feel free to look at my webpage to hear samples of the type of music that will feature in the recording project that you are backing and to listen to some of my earlier recordings.
The tracks
I have chosen 6 of my tracks to develop for this project. These 6 tracks make up approximately 20 minutes of music. Here are their working titles and descriptions :
1/. Winterspring
In Cairns we don't experience traditional seasons. I wrote this track when I was thinking about spring in New Zealand and how that differs here in the tropics. The track seeks to capture the playful mood and the sense of hope that spring brings. It features the acoustic guitar with finger style techniques.
2/. The Forest
This track is heavily influenced by the sounds of the tropical rain forest. It uses a number of innovative guitar techniques and modern effects units to reproduce the sounds of the rain forest in a hypnotic and melodic fashion on the acoustic guitar.
3/. Arizona
This track attempts to convey a sense of the desert through music. It shows my blues/rock roots as a musician, introduces the heavy sounds of the bass and involves three separate guitar parts.
4/. The McCracken Symphonic
The title track for the EP uses a combination of innovative guitar playing and modern looping techniques. It uses multiple layers of a single acoustic guitar recorded as loops. The track has a hypnotic, dreamy sound that I captured when I wrote it on holiday in my home town of Hamilton, New Zealand.
5/. These Streets
When I first moved to Cairns I tried my hand at busking. This offered some interesting insights into my new town. I saw many different types of people going about there daily lives and I attempted to capture my understanding of these people through music. This track has a strong blues influence.
6/. Mystery
This is the heaviest track on the CD. It features drums, bass and multiple electric guitar parts. I have included this track to be loyal to my roots as an '80s styles metal fan.
The Budget
Making music is rewarding but it is also expensive. Producing this CD at my ideal level will cost around $1600 and will use several thousand dollars worth of equipment that I already own. I also have the option to produce it using only equipment that I already own and this will reduce the cost to $400 for 100 CD's but it will be a bare bones project.
Targets and Stretch Goals
Kickstarter works on the basis that funding targets must be achieved before any money changes hands. I have therefore split this project into small achievable funding targets with clear purposes. Once we achieve a target I will introduce stretch goals up to the full $1600. You will see these as stretch goal targets. The target levels will be as follows:
$400 - Fund CD Production
If we only achieve the minimum funding of $400 this will go directly into producing 100 CD's at $4.00 each.
$600 - Upgrade to BR 800
I currently record with a Boss BR80 Multi tracker. This is a beautiful little unit and has been used to record all my tracks to date. It does however have a number of limitations and I feel I have outgrown it. My first upgrade will be to a BR800 which is essentially the big brother of the BR80. If we achieve more than $600 and less than $1000 I will purchase the BR800 fund the CD production myself.
$1000 - Fund CD production and upgrade to BR800
At this level the BR800 upgrade and the physical production of 100 CDs will be funded.
$1400 - Protools Upgrade
I currently use a software package called Reaper to record, mix and produce my music. This software is good but not as good as Protools. Protools is the industry standard and used in many large scale professional recording studios. This funding level will fund protools at $400 as well as CD production and the BR800 upgrade.
$1600 - Fully fund upgrades plus recording consumables
This project will use around $200 worth of leads and strings. These are consumable costs associated with playing and recording music. $1600 will fully the project including upgrades, CD production and consumables.
Any funding over $1600 will be used to promote the music and produce more tracks.
The bigger picture
I have been studying, playing, teaching, recording and producing music for over 15 years. The McCracken Symphonic is my first all original recording. The long term goal of this project is to produce music that can be shared with the widest audience possible through CD sales, through live performance and through radio play. My hope is that this will further my career as a musician, provide listeners with music they enjoy and inspire other musicians. With a bit of luck you will hear my music on your local radio station and be able to say "Steve Schwartz - I backed him when he was just another nobody".
Risks and challenges
The six tracks I have selected for this project have been developed to varying degrees. Some have been recorded as demos, some have been written but not recorded and some are still in development. There is a possibility that the tracks, their titles or their style may change throughout the project. What I do commit to is producing the best 6 tracks I can for this project.
There is always a remote possibility that I may become dilapidated or debilitated to the extent that I cannot play or record my music. It is also possible that the project could take longer than expected. If the project goes over time I will keep in touch with you with regular updates. In the very unlikely event that it is not be completed I will offer you a full refund of your money.
