The creator of the Marvel Avengers Academy subreddit is effectively holding the subreddit for ransom.

"I would consider turning it over to someone else for a price though." Previous moderators have been banned for such activities.

Besides being flat-out extortion, this is also against Reddit's own Content Policy as he is both bullying (a community of over 1700) users and breaking reddit by making it difficult for anyone else to use reddit due to his actions.

I'm going to weigh in here as the first mod that was banned by him and someone who had been posting essentially since the sub first got started and the game first came out.

As others have said, this is a subreddit that has over a thousand subscribers, no doubt has many more lurkers considering how popular the game is, had a lot of valuable information about the game in its threads and wiki that hasn't been duplicated elsewhere that we know of, and is a place where official game employees looked for feedback and interacted with the community.

Two of the mods--myself and Quill--tried our best to resolve the problem peacefully with the admin (the third mod is/was indisposed with real life concerns), and in return he's nuked and locked the sub.

Even if it's not possible to restore full control of the sub, I'd at least like us all to be provided with read access to the sub including the deleted posts, so we can salvage the information on it for wherever else we end up.

I realize this situation is a bit outside the normal parameters for this sort of request, but I would really like for it to be considered.

I understand that this is out of the normal criteria for redditrequest, but I think that the subreddit is better served by giving it back to the community who used it than as an empty room.

I also believe that there's precedent here. If memory serves, the head moderator of /r/WOW was removed for kicking everyone out of the sub after the Warlords of Draenor expansion pack because he got angry that he was stuck in the queue. That's a little bit different, but in my opinion they're both examples of moderators misusing their power to the detriment of the community.

UPDATE: On his user page, he's no longer listed as a moderator of /r/MarvelAvengersAcademy. I can't say for sure, but that leads me to suspect that there are no mods there anymore.

The subreddit was an active, vibrant, and productive community, full of information, discussion, and class participation. Several employees of TinyCo, the company behind Avengers Academy, also participated on occasion. This was a great reddit, and it doesn't deserve to be nuked and everyone's hard work wiped out. Please give it back to the users who made it work.

Can confirm. He has shown zero respect for the community at large and the other mods, all of whom made the subreddit what it was. At this point I am honestly wondering if he had some kind of mental breakdown--the drama was just so sudden and total. He seems to be unable to deal with reality.

Please help us, we can start over, but many of us just wish to go back to the original sub. Can confirm this started as an issue with 7-10 people and ended with everyone locked out, posts deleted, people banned, and ultimately the sub nuked out of spite. We did our best to resolve things peacefully through honest and respectful conversation but that wasn't allowed to happen. Thank you.

We actually had people working with the game regularly commenting and taking feedback. It was active with strats, data, events, etc. - and the mod just nuked it all and banned the other mods.

Just a few days ago i created an account so i could participate in that particular community, then out of nowhere and in response to certain drama happening regarding the main moderator, the community was locked down and everything was deleted, i would just want to add my voice to save that awesome community that also had members of the staff of the game actively checking what users had to say!

In addition to the great community, tons of information/resources and communication with the game company, this subreddit had gorgeous flair, banner, and general ... pretty stuff? Don't know how to describe, or how it works, but it had all kinds of visual elements that I'm pretty sure the other mods created and now they are gone - I miss them on the new temporary subreddit :(

The mod who locked everything also claimed he created it so I understand if there's no way for the other former mods to get it back, but I think they absolutely deserve access to everything so that all the info, art assets, perhaps some of the old posts even, can be migrated to the new location and so that the list of subscribers can be invited to the new location.

It's really unfortunate that all of this happened, but it was one of the more bizarre things I've seen - this mod made a rule that no negative posts or posts containing criticism would be allowed, then retroactively deleted all posts containing criticism, then started deleting posts that commented on the policy/tried to communicate with him... then apparently de-modded other mods and started locking/unlocking things repeatedly. I don't think anybody could have seen this coming :(

I was only a mostly lurker, but that sub really was not only high quality, but basically the only place online to find info on that specific game, so any help these awesome folks could get in continuing to provide those resources would be very appreciated.

The actions taken by the owner were an overreaction, one dispute over a decision he made and suddenly he burns the place down and locks all the doors. Would be great if we could get our home back, so much easier than trying to move everyone.

Please help us. I joined Reddit just to participate in this great subreddit. Everyone was super helpful and there was a lot of great exchanges of tips and tricks. Plus, as others have mentioned, admins from the game would occasionally reply as well, and have implemented changes based on user suggestions.

While I wasn't involved in the "drama" personally (drama being the word the mod used), it was an extreme over reaction to get rid of over a HUNDRED or so helpful links and posts dedicated to strategies and information regarding the game. Really hoping we can get a new sub going or get the old one back :(

I was a Lurker in the old sub, didn't even have an account, but I can confirm that it went down very quickly and very ugly. One person shouldn't be allowed to destroy something a community of hundreds of people created together. It saddens me that it came to it and the damage is done, but please have a heart and help us recover what was created by the community and could, without your help now be lost forever.

It is in untenable that a moderator can keep to himself the work that many users worked so hard to obtain as well as useful information that was used to play the game.

just adding my voice to chorus. this sub was my first introduction to reddit and the community was so great i started checking it almost every day. this bit of drama came out of nowhere and i really hope this very active community and resource can become available once more. I also think QuillWhoWatches would be a great user to give the reddit to. I imagine democracy and balance of power will be very important to the sub in the aftermath, but the transfer needs to happen to someone, and he was both a mod previously and a trustworthy leader who stood up for the community.

I am slowly becoming more horrified that so far nothing has been done to rectify this situation when this moderator is clearly patronizing the rest of the community, whether that be through his PMs or they varying & twisted posts on the front page of his private subreddit.

I created a reddit account specifically because this community seemed so welcoming and beneficial. But what began as joy is now turning to disgust as this issue is being ignored. If you want my honest opinion, I did not sign up to be harassed by a mod who clearly is undergoing personal issues, and since this issue is continuing, this only intensifies the urgency of this request.

Please, any mod that may be reading this, just hear us out! Please provide this young but increasingly brilliant community with the home it once had!

Wanted to add my voice in getting the sub back. I originally agreed with Ben about the amount of complaint threads. Only to see the whole thing become like a real life comic book. The end result was unexpected and honestly kinda crazy. Not to mention unwarrented overkill. It was like finding an ant at school and deciding to bomb the entire school out of fear and spite. If the admin of the previous subreddit couldn't handle it, there are surely others who would take over for him. Moving from sub to sub kills communities, and this game is too much fun to simply disappear from Reddit. Especially during an event!

Holy crap! Can't believe that subreddit got closed off like that. I started playing Avengers Academy when I heard about it on Rooster Teeth's video game podcast "The Patch." I was looking for information about the game, whether it be a wiki or a forum, that could help me if I needed it. I stumbled upon the subreddit that is now closed.

The subreddit was helpful to say the least. I haven't participated in forums for quite some time (years), so I just lurked. It wasn't until the MarvelsAvengersAcademy subreddit was nuked and closed that I created a reddit account to find out what the heck happened. Needless to say the owner of the subreddit has not responded to my message.

I only used the MarvelAvengersAcademy reddit for a short time (and signed up to reddit just to use it), but it was a really great place to discuss and get advice. Everyone was really helpful.

I came online to check today and all of this had happened and I had no idea what had gone on. I have no real opinion on what happened. But I ultimately really loved the community and it would be great if we could get the subreddit back. There are other ones being set up, but the original was the best.

The subreddit was a great place and while I wont say it was always peaceful, there were a great many dedicated and helpfull people to look for and share iformations and insight.

It would be a shame to loose community members because now if you google avengers academy reddit the place which pop up is the locked site ...

The closing of this sub, and holding it for hostage for payment is completely against reddit rules.

This was an active community with contacts to the company who made the game and was a space to communicate with them as well as each other.

Adding my voice to the others. The subreddit community was a massive part of the game, and it's shocking that one person could nuke the entire subreddit because he was basically a fanboy. I don't nessecarily mean that as just an insult, but as a way of describing what happened; he very clearly had invested a lot of money in the game, and did not want anyone speaking negative Y about it all (despite the majority of criticisms of the game being very constructive). A single fanboy of a product should not be able to take down a subreddit used by hundreds of users.
