Spurs and United: Structurally Similar Vastly Different (self.reddevils)

LVG is a quote machine and stepped in it this time with comparing United to the current Spurs team. Which is another gem to add to the continuous banter in r/soccer.

However I think we should discuss why our 4-2-3-1 and Spurs are so vastly different in style when structurally they are the same. European football is seeing more and more of this shape played in high level competition and yet United's version is tepid in comparison to Spurs. I believe this is a combination of two things. Personnel, which needs to be addressed in the transfer market, and Style which needs to be addressed by a change in manager.

Our Personnel in comparison to Spurs works out unfortunately in their favor.

  • Lloris< De Gea

  • Rose> Rojo, CBJ, Darmian, Blind, Young (Shaw is an argument)

  • Vertonghen > Blind

  • Alderweireld = Smalling?

  • Walker> Darmian, Valencia, TFM, Varela

  • Dembele> Herrera, Fellaini, Schweinsteiger

  • Dier> Carrick, Schneiderlin

  • Eriksen > Mata, Lingard

  • Alli> Mata, Herrera, Lingard, Rooney (I question if he can truly make the jump to #10 if he could there's an argument here)

  • Lamela = Martial?, better than Depay but I'd take Martial as my attacking wing player over Lamela, I can't sort out if that's being a United fan or if he's just demonstrably better.

  • Kane> Rooney (current form but maybe just better), Rashford, Martial

So I would say that their players fit the system they play in better than our current crop of players.

There is also the fact that due to the confidence in their roles they play more cohesive and due to that cohesion are able to play free flowing beautiful football with some risk and flair. We're too caught up in who's doing what and that's LVG overcomplicating the system.

You didn't really need to explain yourself. People who don't know that United and Spurs are tactically similar don't watch football, outside from United.

But since Luis said it, it's suddenly a howler.

I just hate that there's a lack of balanced discussion as to the why. That ends up being why we get so much negative back and forth in this sub. No one wants to use facts and reason to support why they say the things they do. At least not once you get past the top comment on each post. I'm not trying to shitpost I just would prefer to see some of this back and forth more formalized that halfway through the comments on the twitter post....

I have to agree with you, I'm relatively new to r/reddevils and mostly its just negative bitching where people find holes in your comment rather than discuss the point you attempted to make. Only once have I actually had a decent back and forth and a discussion. Generally some guy comes along down votes your post, calls you a nob end or a plastic because he disagree's.

Dembele > Our Midfielders

I still remember people on here ridiculing me when I suggested Dembele as a possible candidate as an upgrade to our midfielders at that time. (Fletcher, Herrera, Carrick, Fellaini, Anderson)

Granted that he almost looked out of favor at Spurs then. But still, the replies I got were along the lines of, "He'd never be good enough to play for us". And now he is a relatively unsung hero of an incredible Spurs side sitting three places above us comfortably.

Yes, I'm salty.
