Okay. Firstly, for LvG's system to work, you need technically adept players. Players who can get that risky pass almost always right. We do not have that. Since almost always every risky pass for us results in the loss of possession and a chance for a counter attack, LvG I think, has asked players to avoid losing the ball as much as possible. This results in a really really dire, slow game when the opponents do not attack the ball and prefer sitting deep. So the chances we create are also minimal. Lesser chances, lesser goals.

one of the commentators explained it very well against Villa, as you said, LVG seems to be focusing on the defensive aspect of things , afraid of losing the ball, but I think it's also something that has gotten stuck, so beyond keeping the ball as much as possible, pplayers seem to be afraid of losing the ball at all, no risky shots, although we see this becoming less of an issue with the fresh players we've had on account of injuries.

In all fairness, I believe Luke Shaw was a big part of LVG's plan, at the beginning of the year we had a team that was set up to move up from behind, with a high of something like 17 injuries though and pacey players not in form, Memphis, Rooney, etc. any inital plans he must have had for attacking could have easily gone out the window.

Lack of a class creative player. City struggled to score goals when De Bruyne was injured. Going into the season, many asked where the creativity was going to come from, it wasn't addressed in the summer window.

There are elements of what others have said but we have created chances but failed to take them which suggests there is also an element of our players feeling the pressure in front of goal and getting tight. Confidence is always a major issue with players

Like people have said, we play a possession football, to make possession football lead to goalscoring opportunities you need players capable of making that final key pass(think Özil).

We clearly have a good squad of players, but we don´t have that player who should be the focal point of possession football. Our midfield of 3 against Aston Villa was Fellaini, Schneiderlin and Rooney. All good players, but not one of them is suited for a team that plays possession football. Look at the midfield of teams that have played successfull possession football through the years, they have all had at least 2 midfielders capable of making that final pass. Having that midfield, playing that system, is similar to playing counterattacking style football without having fast wingers, is deemed to fail.

Adding to that our front three have zero experience. Our left winger is a 20 year old playing his first season in the premier league, our striker is an 18 year old with seven premier league matches on his belt and our right winger has only 20 apperances in the league.

What I don´t understand is why Van Gaal hasn´t addressed those problems in one of his four transfer windows.

Put it this way.

Louis van Gaal took 25 league goals out of the team (RVP & ADM goals and assists) and we didn't replace them.

The numbers need to add up.

Basti/Morgan/Carrick - 2 out of those 3 usually start most games. Between them they'd get like maximum 4 goals a season.

Is Herrera going to get 10 goals a season in the league? Fellaini? Memphis?

We don't have players who can score.

Also, we don't have a Robben-esque player who can consistently create a chance out of nothing. Martial and maybe Rooney are probably the closest but they're not at that level.

I think you pretty much said it.

Slow build up allows the opposition defence to settle but the players are struggling to disorganise the defence. Creative passing, movement, decision making, risk, confidence, luck all come into that. What more reasons can there be?

Lack of midfield runners, linger on the ball too long allowing teams to keep their defensive shape, no one trying to make penetrative/risky passes, lack of mobility in midfield at times, and more most likely. Also our movement is bad, so static that it's easy to defend against us, and predict etc. It's part of the reason our defence is somewhat ok but why our attack suffers dearly.

Another reason is that most of our attacks come from the left side which is predictable for opposition defences.
