Black people were/are made fun of for it/told it's not acceptable, but suddenly it's "cool" and "trendy" when a white person does it? Not cool.

Why are black people the gatekeepers of who can have dreads when ancient non-black cultures had them too?

I've grown up in a world where people around me clown and criticize other black people for dreads, braids, and cornrows.

But when a white person can wear it and get praise for it?

I'mma be a little salty.

Like, it's not wrong for them to wear the hairstyle they want to, but can you see where there'll be some pain and annoyance and resentment for those who don't have that freedom without being judged harshly?

They're not the "gatekeepers". Maybe ancient non-black cultures had them but that's beside the point--black people today are shamed for their hair/told to defer to white standards of beauty. At the end of the day, white people can still wear their hair in dreads if that's what they want. No one's saying white people aren't allowed do it; for me personally, it's just not cool. But the idea that it's "just hair" (ergo, not a big deal), to non-black folks is a huge problem, because these people have the option of wearing their hair however they please, whereas black people have been (and are often) ostracized for wearing their hair naturally/embracing their culture.

I don't understand how this is a solution to anything. You're pretty much saying "people have looked down on me for my hair in the past so I'm going to look down on you for your hair now". Isn't it more productive to just stop giving a shit about any bodies hair across the board?

a random person's opinion does not mean they are the ambassador to black people, and speak with a final authority. they are answering a question; why do people always conflate this as be all end all statement? Did they say anything about black people being gatekeepers?

Possibly because black people are still getting flack for it?

I don't think the issue is arbitrarily trying to control what hairstyles people can wear, it's trying to get people to see that one group profiting (e.g. being called cool or a fashion icon or even just not being profiled as a negative stereotype) off of something that another group currently still gets shit on for doing is kind of messed up.

Yea profiting on precieved coolness is the biggest problem for the black community in my area too.

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't realise we weren't allowed to talk about something unless it was 'the biggest' problem in our lives.

I don't understand it though, is a white person allowed to have that hair cut if they think it's aesthetically pleasing?

I said in another comment that people can do whatever they want with their hair. However, I think think that a self-aware and thoughtful person would realise that it's kind of messed up to be praised for something when another group of people get denigrated for that exact same thing, and would choose to not to continue to perpetuate our society's tendency to uplift 'ethnic' features when they appear on white folk, while deriding said ethnic people.

Who thinks they look good on white people?

I'm guessing every white person who chooses to get them 0_0
