I dunno if I'd call it mad, I'm mostly just annoyed that it's wrong on 4/4 counts.

Broke is wrong because no definition of broke includes "shitload of income and assets but highly in debt."

Homophobic could only be true if we were especially homophobic relative to other countries. Instead we're among the most tolerant.

Religious oppression there's no rational argument for. The worst we have is raving evangelicals who haven't even been able to keep evolution out of schools or stop abortion from being kept legal and they're in the minority.

Martial law is just dumb.

If people think this is funny, great, but it just sounds like the kind dumbass thing you'd hear a Freshman say at college before extolling the virtues of marxism.

Arguably, laws against abortion are gaining greater momentum. Right now, it's just certain states limiting access, and adding hoops to jump through. Just mentioning.

Exactly. Jokes like that are only funny when there's a degree of truth to them. This is just dead wrong.

Degree of truth: the US has a lot of debt and a big deficit (25% of the worlds debt, 20% of its GDP)

Degree of truth: some states in the US are currently fighting to deny LGBT protected status rights (bathroom issues aside)

Degree of truth: ~1/2 of the country votes for a party that bases many of its social, domestic, and foreign policies on religious interpretations; religion is important to the point that there has never been a not-Christian president

Degree of truth: The actual meaning of martial law does not apply, but we do incarcerate a lot of people, monitor communications domestically and internationally, and maintain a far outsized military

I'd say there is probably argument for this joke falling into "ha, that's a joke that uses hyperbole in a humorous context" category.

Edit: I'm American btw... great country, only one that could even touch the claim of "greatest", but its not like our shit doesn't stink guys...

By that logic the whole world is broke. Having debt is not in any way the same thing as being broke. The US is one of the richest and the most influential country in the world.

You get to call that a degree of truth when they win and the reform lasts. Good luck with that. So many billion dollar companies are threatening to refuse to do business in those states if the bill passes. Attempting to repress is not actual repression.

Sure, when you ignore the actual meaning of martial law. I guess a speeding ticket counts as "living under martial law."

I mean the US has about 25% of the world's debt and only about 20% of it's GDP so...

And also this was the very first year same sex couples have been able to file federal taxes together in every state, so I guess we should wait to see if that sticks too before saying the US isn't bigoted?

And yeah, I said the actual meaning of martial law doesn't apply, but the US definitely displays definitive aspects of martial law, some to a larger extent that actual autocratic societies... So is it hyperbole yes but it's still a good, succinct criticism/joke...

Also no contestation of the religious aspects, so at least 1/4 for the joke rings true to even the most nationalistic lol.

I'm American btw.

The anti gay people have lost the culture war. It is going to stick. Maybe we should wait before saying the US is bigoted?

What aspects are you referring to exactly? Laws that enable the US to be a functional country?

[–]Iron-Fist 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

You're right, it isn't the same as being broke, but it's a pretty succinct way of joking about it.

The anti gay people are currently in charge of both houses of congress so...

As for the aspects of martial law, I mentioned them in my prior comment: incarceration rate (highest in the world, the whole world), extent of surveillance, and proportion of military. Not all inherently bad things, I certainly enjoy my relatively rich and secure existence here, but it's also okay to point out the potential problems involved.
