Don't you think people have a right to say whatever they want about world leaders in democratic countries?
If I want to say George W Bush sucked a monkeys nutsack, several times, and ate his jizz regularly, the government isn't gonna come to my house and tell me to take down this reddit comment.
It shouldn't be illegal to make fun of politicians in any way, especially not someone as corrupt and as big a piece of poop as Erdogan. At least in the United States of America I can be pretty sure of my freedom of speech to say that. Nobody's gonna come to my house and take me to court for it, because it would be a massive waste of their time.
And if the mods think this comment is too hateful or bigoted, go right ahead and delete it. This is their subreddit, and while i'd rather them not delete it, I'd understand if they did.

Do you not have laws against slander an libel in the us?
[–]CrayonOfDoom [スコア非表示] 30分前 (2子コメント)
Supreme Court cases bar strict liability for libel and forbid libel claims for statements that are so ridiculous as to be patently false. Much like what was just posted.
[–]Skipaspace [スコア非表示] 15分前 (1子コメント)
I think those supreme court cases deal mainly with the Internet. But I think if you made that statement about bush on a tv show and stated it as fact and people started believing it, bush would have a case.

Obviously, but this situation was not really like that.

Very weak and it's very hard to be convicted of libel against public figures

lol, this is funny because Rogers (who owned Toronto Blue Jays) sent police officers to a twitter user's home who tweeted that he'd take down Ted Rogers' (founders of Rogers) statue outside of Toronto Blue Jays home stadium and threw it into the lake.
[–]joshuawsome [スコア非表示] 33分前 (1子コメント)
Threatening to throw someone else's shit into a lake is a lot different than insulting someone. You have the right to freedom of speech, not freedom to vandalize.
[–]lIlCitanul [スコア非表示] 18分前 (0子コメント)
But he didn't vandalize, he threatened to vandalize. But yes, you can't threaten about some things (murder being a big one!):).

Of course it shouldn't be illegal. But free speech discussions in Germany are usually cut off by "but in this instance it went too far and censorship is fine". Idiotic, really.
[–]Skipaspace [スコア非表示] 29分前* (0子コメント)
Well if you said that about W. he could bring a slander case against you because they are not truths. However, he would have to prove is cost him jobs or reputation.
And the difference is that if a German would have said it in reddit, nothing would have happened but a guy on a tv show did so it changes things because of the audience size. Unless the post went viral. Therefore more people heard it, therefore the Turkish leader has a case that it hurt his reputation and its untruthful. At least that is how it works in America.
If i understand he is for getting trouble for insulting a leader and not slandering a leader. And I have no idea about German law. But he is probably protected because it wasnt a direct insult but a piece in free speech, which is what the article says.

Exactly what you're saying may be a little different than freedom of speech. You could say that in your opinion George Bush seems like the kind of person who would do those things. But if you were to say it in a way that a reasonable person could believe that he actually does those things then you could get into trouble for libel and or slander.

That is the thing! You are unimportant. Nobody cares what you say.
"Trump is an asshole and he got all his money by evading taxes." is libel and slander. The reason why you won't get persecuted is not because all free speech is protected in the US, but because Trump does not give a fuck about you.

Yeah, welcome to "The US is one of the only countries with full freedom of speech". Most of Europe has archaic backwards laws like this. The UK has extremely strict libel laws, for instance.
The US is probably #1 in terms of freedom of speech, though Japan is also very free.

To be fair you can criticize a democratic leader under current laws and be okay in any of the European countries (inclueding Turkey). But saying "he sucked a monkeys nutsack, several times, and ate his jizz regularly" isn't really a constructive argument, unless it was true. These laws are meant to keep shit throwing out of politics. In the US a lot of our issues are simply caused by people not arguing about them, because they are afraid of sounding like a bigot. For example, doing something about Islam is a very serious issue facing America today, but no one talks about it. People are afraid of sounding like a bigot because a lot of bigots out there coughTrumpcough have already made a mess of the argument and created a taboo for the rest of us. I honestly try to avoid ever using the term bigot just to offset the taboo effect, but I had to use it here to explain what is happening.

Well sure it is and it is the same in Germany, BUT if a kinda popular TV Person in the US would heavily insult, not make fun but just Straight out talk shit, any international leader i am pretty sure there would be similiar consequences as we face them now here in Germany.
