By "Zen Masters" you mean the Japanese Buddhist Dhyanists, right?

"Zen" refers to the Meditation (Dhyana) School of Japanese Buddhism. It emphasizes attaining enlightenment in this life, right in the here now, by dropping all intellectual ideas and judgments.

Some people have confused it with nihilism. Some people who think they don't have to make an effort are called "Buji," or "do-nothings," for their senseless bravado in claiming to be already awakened, or for claiming that the idea of "attainment" doesn't apply to their dumb asses. Sound familiar? They don't clarify the Great Matter for themselves, they just chatter on like puppets.
