This is what you call a "vanity stat". He thoroughly underwhelmed this season and hasn't performed to the level we'd hoped of him. How many times has he been subbed for being ineffective?

Cleverly had a 96% win rate for United. It's an almost pointless stat to throw out there because there are too many variables it doesn't account for.

There's usually incredibly little causal effect.

This sort of stat makes a lot more sense over the course of 50-100+ matches. Any sample smaller than that and it's pointless. Even with a large simple it's too reductive to be useful.

I love this stat.

Yeah, it's a pointless stat. Kinda like saying 'Every game Man Utd lost this season, David De Gea played 90 minutes. Time to drop De Gea?'.

He's really poor in the 10 role especially. Lots of running and 5 yard passes but no actual creating of chances, beating players, scoring goals or doing anything that really matters and has a decisive impact on games.

He's like the reverse Di Maria and not in a good way.

I think that flies a lot more in the CM role but he's hardly great there either. He's a Europa League level player, Bilbao was about his level.

Due to Mata being perpetually inconsistent, yeah Ander should start more. Neither are good enough to be our starters for next season and beyond, though. Mata should be sold, Ander should be a solid backup.

That's not how stats work. Read up on survivor bias.

The more likely explanation is that he's less likely to be subbed off when the game is under control.

I'd start him ahead of any other number 10 at our club. Ideally not really what we want though. We really need someone like Rodriguez.

Ander Herrera would be a gem for United under Mourinho. Mark my words!!

Couldn't agree more. If Mourinho comes Herrera will prove his worth.

Nah - I don't think he's good enough to play that no.10 role imo. I'm hoping we bring some one to fill that role in the summer personally.

I'd like to see him partner Schneiderlin in midfield more often.

He should have played more this year, much better than Mata's been and he works a lot harder, think Mourinho would like Herrera, personally.

Am I missing something with Herrera? Why is there this illusion that he's a top player? I like him but if the club has any ambition I cant see him starting in the long term future..

I agree. I think he's a good squad player and add's depth to our midfield but we need someone much, much better at 10.

He was really really poor on Wednesday. Was just no where to be seen at any point.

His passing is really inconsistent at times too, he'll make an impossible pass and then fuck up 2 of the simplest passes.

Totally, and he just goes missing for long periods of time, not to mention at the end of the game he was fucking lucky to not get sent off.

It's good to see people agree with you today. I mentioned this yesterday and got downvoted to oblivion.

I thought he contributed well defensively , we were more or less a 3 man midfield at times which neutralized West Ham's attacking threat. At one stage I remember Carrick and Fellani pressing high with Herrera dropping into a holding role behind them. He wasn't perfect by any means but he certainly was an improvement on our other CAM options imo.

That isn't why you pick a number 10.

Did he create any chances? Did he dribble past players creating chaos/space for others? Did he score?

Did he make any kind of decisive impact on the game?

If all you want is hard work and defensive contribution we should pick Fellaini there because at least he's an aerial threat.

Except he intercepted the ball to lead to the first goal...

That's not enough contribution for a 90 minute match.

The original comment was "nowhere to be seen at any point." So I found one, which was crucial to the match. I never said it was enough, just debunking the original point.

Who did we lose against?

Herrera should have played more as a CM though and not a CAM especially with Fellaini behind him. I just can't understand why LVG didn't follow his last season success and changed both Herrera-Fellaini roles.

Vanity stat or not, I'm unsure why people seem to think Herrera is so "average". His individual stats are quite good, check Sqwuaka.

All he needs is a good run of games and a proper pairing. He is one of the more baffling players used/not used by LVG in my eyes and he rarely gets good opportunities. He will get one game, play well, and then be dropped for 3. It's the Memphis effect.

If Mourinho comes, I think we'll be seeing a lot more of Herrera... and he'll be quite effective in a system that utilizes faster turning and playing with a high work rate.

He's still been one of our bad players.

I know people will just shrug this off and call it just another stat, but even to the eye I think we've looked so much better with him next to Schneiderlin in the middle of the park. The lad works hard, has a decent eye for a pass and works incredibly hard for the cause. Something like that is invaluable to this side. That partnership has been so underrated, which is strange because Schneiderlin and Herrera compliment each other so well as a partnership.

has a decent eye for a pass

He doesn't though. He plays a lot of square 5 yard balls but an incisive pass high up the pitch which creates chances and makes something happen? Very rarely.

And that's fine if you're a DM who's a defensive brick wall but Herrera isn't that at all, he's meant to be a creative midfielder but he doesn't actually create anything.
