So on a person to person basis how is this not a scam? If someone walked up to you and said "hey give me 6% of your income for the rest of your life and then when you are almost dead from old age I'll start giving it back in very small chunks. Oh, and if you die before then I'll just keep it." Would you do it? I get that it had societal benefits when the economy was not as strong but at this point it's just robbing people of the interest they could be making off of it being invested and only that little if they live long enough to collect all that they put in.

Because this isn't person to person and the analogy and comparison don't work. It's a social contract between society and the government we create that says we will pay into a system so that the elderly of this generation can retire and we can feel confident that the generation that hasn't been born for us will pay for us when we're old.

The government is not a household and making government budget comparisons to a middle class family and asking people "well if someone randomly asked you to give them 25% of your money would you do it?!?" simply don't hold and don't even make sense.

There are still a lot of people who rely on social security for most or all of their income.

Which is a problem and something we would need to find a solution for but that doesn't mean we shouldn't try and find a way to fix it.
