6%? Try 15%. If you're an employee you put in 7.5% and your employer puts in 7.5%. Self-employed? You're on the hook for the full 15%

That last part is actually not quite true. You get to deduct the cost of your self-employment taxes so you're not paying the full 15%.

What are you talking about? If I bill $100/hr as an independent contractor when I go to pay myself I have to withhold 15% for the SSI tax deposit. They have the same scam in place for Medicare. People on salaries don't seem to understand the fact that they actually make an extra ~10% and it all goes to SSI/Medicare, but then again that's the point. People already think taxes are too high. If they knew what they were actually paying they might start trying to elect people who don't just spend left and right (and I'm talking about both sides of the aisle here).

Direct quote from the IRS website.
Self-Employment Tax Deduction You can deduct the employer-equivalent portion of your self-employment tax in figuring your adjusted gross income. This deduction only affects your income tax. It does not affect either your net earnings from self-employment or your self-employment tax.
That means you get to deduct the taxes you paid into SS, lowering your tax bill, and lowering your overall effective tax rate.
Also... being mad about paying your taxes doesn't make it a scam.
Also... don't try to school me. I was a tax preparer for 7 years before I went to work for a bank. This was literally my job.

Why shouldn't you be able to deduct the taxes you paid into SS? It's a tax imposed by the government. From the business side of things it is a cost of doing business. You know what would actually lower my overall tax bill? Not having to pay it. Yes, my income tax would go up, but not by 100% of the amount.

Alright number one... what kind of logic are you even trying to use. "My taxes would be lower if I didn't have to pay my taxes!"
Second... if you think the SSI tax should be abolished are you willing to tell millions of retired Americans that they can no longer buy food, pay their electric bills or go to the doctor?
Everyone has the fantasy of being the self-made man that somehow ticks all the boxes and saves for retirement and gets to ride into the sunset at 55 and lives up the next 30 years enjoying retirement but the data shows that Americans have hardly anything saved, for emergencies or retirement. And it's not because they're lazy we work longer hours than any other developed country on earth. Our savings rates are abysmal because pay is stagnant, and things like housing, education, food, and medical costs make it difficult to save for tens of millions of people.
We tried it your way before 1937 and old people largely died in abject poverty. The entire reason why SS was created was because we tried your way from the inception of the country until 1937 and it didn't work.

My point is that people think they pay 7.5% of their earnings in and semi-accept the system as it is. What they don't realize is that the system is taking in twice that much. When you hire me at a 100K/year salary you don't look at it as paying that amount. You look at it as 110 just to cover ss/mc. When you are looking to cut costs you are not considering 100 as the number because that is not what you are paying for my services.

Dude stop you are literally making zero sense.

If your going with that line of thinking your also paying more than just salary plus ss because as an employer your paying unemployment insurance, retirement benefits, vacations, maternity leave and various other expenses. Obviously business understand all this and figure it into the cost of hiring someone.
