He's best as a LW now because he can run at full backs but once he starts adding more goals to his game he'll become a striker

You can't be certain he will just suddenly become a prolific scorer though. For every Henry or Griezmann there's a Welbeck or Walcott. We spent years saying Welbeck will be a striker once he adds goals but it never happened

which is why I want him to play upfront

Martial scores less as a striker than he does as a winger though, it's not only about where he plays it's also just having that instinct which some players just never develop despite having all the ability to be top goalscorers in theory

Its hard to judge a attacking player in this set up imo, and wouldn't you say that there is more to a st than goals , like look how useless lukaku is when he isn't scoring he doesn't offer much

A striker needs to score goals. It's not absolutely everything but unless you can score 20 goals a season in all comps minimum you'll never be a starting striker for a top club long term

Lukaku is a much better striker than Martial is right now for that reasons. Football is about scoring goals, you always need someone who can reliably do that 20-30 times a season on his own and 99% of the time that's your striker. If you have a striker who doesn't score it's a massive set back before you're even started in your season. It's easy to say well other players all contribute but it rarely works like that. Just look at how much we've suffered this season from Rooney and Martial not scoring enough goals as strikers

Unless you have Ronaldo or Messi scoring 40 goals as a winger then you'd always rather have a striker who scores 30 goals and does little else than a Welbeck who's great at football but can't score

14 goals in 25 starts and 9 sub for England, a better goals per minute than Rooney, Charlton and Shearer with no penalties says different, play him up front he scores.

i think this discussion heavily depends on the next summer/manager.the way we are now,Martial is our best striker,left/right winger, and hell he might be our best number 10 because the competition there is not that hard to beat lol.one positive with the idea of Ibra and his age is that we could use him with Rashford on the bench,a few years later and it would be Martial left and Rasford center, and man wouldn't that be every Utd fan wet dream

if his off the ball movement, positioning and heading improves -> striker

if it doesn't -> inside forward

In this team right now...a LW absolutely. He has the ability to drive at defenders and beat them almost everytime and create amazing things in the box...something which no one else seems capable of doing. Plus I trust Martial to put away a chance if he finds himself inside the box with the ball at his feet. His pace and dribbling and finishing are fantastic.

How can you write so much on such a simple subject?

Basically he doesn't score enough goals yet. He finishes well but right now lacks that killer instinct of knowing where to be to get goals. If he's an Henry or Griezmann who adds that to his game with age he'll be a striker, if he doesn't he will stay as a winger.

I think in the words of Gary Neville, Martial is more like a winger-forward instead of a straight up striker or winger. I was fortunate enough to be alive to watch Thierry Henry throughout his entire career and I do see why the media has been likening Martial to Henry in some ways, because he really does resemble Henry. On paper, Henry is a striker/centre-forward, but while he's on the pitch, he always emerges from off-centre pockets of space and runs at defenders. The one thing Martial probably doesn't have is Henry's speed, but I'm sure that will come in time. If we're looking for a traditional striker who moves into channels and running in behind, I don't think Martial has the necessary qualities to be an Aguero or Van Persie sort of striker, I'm not saying he can't develop into one, we often forget the fact that he's just barely 20 years old, I'm just saying that he doesn't look like a natural striker to me. He looks like someone you could place in the centre, but could work well overlapping with the left wingers or left-backs.
