Hitler could have reached Moscow if he had planned for the winter. The red army was no match for the whermacht. Sure stalin used his meatgrinder like he should have at that time. Drag millions of young boys from their mothers and throw them in the frontlines. But Hitlers army while struggling really had a lot of success with the war in the east. If he had reached Moscow russia would have fallen.

And then we have the west front. Germany was raping the French and the brittish in the war.

If Japan had not attacked usa. Germany would have captured Moscow and London effectively seizing both fronts. And it would be extremely hard for anyone to free these regoins.

In the end. The main hero was General winter.

It wasn't much "General Winter" as it was much Racism. Hitler expected Moscow before the winter happened, so why bother with winter clothing?

If Moscow was lost in 1941, they would have won. Whether or not they could have held Russia for long... That's effectively exterminating the largest country in Europe at the time. Even in our WW2, Russian Partisans had such a great impact, preventing supplies and just causing havoc inside the lines of occupied SU throughout 1942 to the Kursk Offensive.

So now you're spreading a military across what is essentially coast to coast to prevent riots, disruptions etc etc WHILE fearing possible US, British Government in Exile (Through Canada and her other colonies) invasion.

Nazi Germany's ambitions were doomed from the start. It would require holding it's people for at least a generation to effectively brainwash and assimilate it's denizens into the Nazi ideology. I don't think the Wehrmacht can hold all that territory for that long...

This.

People always assume that because the Wehrmacht were close to taking Moscow, they were close to winning the Russian campaign. Russia is VAST, and her people are exceedingly proud and tough. Even if they'd taken Moscow and killed Stalin, they'd have had a long way to go before they could have turned their attention to anything else.
