Marcus Rashford vs James Wilson (self.reddevils)

Ok, so I remember when James Wilson was being touted as the up and coming Striker that United would mold into a world beater in the next couple of years. I haven't seen much from him since and due to my job, have hardly been able to catch a match all season. What makes Rashford different, and is there more potential of him fulfilling the promise of an amazing number 9?

For me there's a world of difference.

Now, as I was saying earlier today, it is far too early to say anything about Rashford but the potential seems to be there.

When I watched Wilson last season he seemed a little lightweight for this level. His touch was a bit sluggish, he'd get moved off the ball and wouldn't know what to do next whereas Rashford makes decisions and tries new things out - they don't always work but he seems to be getting a lot right.

Wilson slayed it at U-21 level but hasn't been able to make the step up yet and, from what I hear, hasn't impressed at Brighton. I could easily see him being just a backup striker at a lower league side when he physically matures but he's still very young and that could all change.

Rashford is physically more dominant than him - both fast but Rashford is strong too. Rashford tries out new things (like the back heel to TFM against Everton) and he is so calm in front of goal.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how he develops and hope he makes it.

Physical strength to hold onto the ball in the league, which Wilson lacked. One of the things I have noticed.

Yeh, Rashford is what we hoped Wilson would be. The biggest issue with Wilson is that he's so slight physically. His finishing is probably as good as Rashford's, but that means jack shit if he can't get himself into scoring opportunities. Should definitely hold onto him until he's 22/23, though. Probably a late bloomer like Lingard.

As everyone else said already, Rashford is a better player. But I do have hope that Januzaj, Pereira and Wilson will come good. I think he needs to improve his touch and hold up play and he will be good striker.

Wilson is allright like Rashford and both have long way to be prolific players but there are tons of potential.

Rashford is more versatile but Wilson is better finisher in my eyes. If Wilson gets the chance like Rashford did, he may be as good as him.

Wilson is quicker and a lethal finisher, people here tend to forget that but if James had gotten so many starts I reckon he'd have scored quite a few as well.

I think both his positioning and his first touch are excellent. Sounds basic but I'm always amazed at how many professional footballers lack these two basic qualities

One thing my friend and I noticed is that Rashford has better pace. He's faster, and you can see it on TV when he just bursts out running.

Rashford seems quicker, a little stronger and 100% direct with his play. 9/10 seems to get the best of a defender on 1v1 and clearly has some quality finishing skills. Wilson (from what i've read on his loan spell) hasn't progressed a lot.

Rashford has benefitted from no competition, he's had an extended run the likes of which Wilson, Hernandez etc didn't get no matter how they played.

They're very similar levels of potential imo. It's bad to judge Wilson on his few appearances during a time when the likes of RVP, Rooney, Falcao, di Maria have all looked shit. Take the Spurs game, Wilson would've been dropped for weeks after a game like that.

In terms of actual comparisons, Wilson is more alive in the box, he gets onto loose balls in the box and he's more likely to poach goals. That doesn't mean he's a goal poacher, he makes good runs in behind the defence and likes to shoot from all ranges. He's a good dribbler, probably quicker than Rashford in a sprint but less explosive from a standing start but who knows unless they race.

Rashford is stronger, bigger, better in the air although he doesn't attack many crosses, could be our crossing has just been crap. He seems more composed, whether that's down to more confidence, more maturity or lack of pressure we won't know. But with the likes of januzaj and Wilson they must feel like they have to do something in the next 30minutes or they're out for weeks whereas Rashford doesn't.

I'd say they're quite different strikers and who knows maybe they'll form a good partnership or front 3 with martial.

Rashford is quicker, more creative, better at taking his man on, a better playmaker, smarter with his positioning, better at pressing and tracking back, and a better finisher.

Honestly, I wish Wilson the best, but there's not one thing that he does better than Rashford. A lot of people were upset about what they perceived as the lack of a chance that Wilson was given, but Rashford has been given a chance because he earned it in much less time than was given to Wilson.

Rashford is at least as fast, but he changes direction quicker, and is much faster laterally. Overall he's just a better athlete.

Ever since his illness Wilson hasn't been great at all, he honestly gets tired after about 30 mins of play. He got off to a great start but really hasn't pushed on from there. Rashford is the more complete player and id say the more talented

Rashford has 6 goals from 11 appearances. JW was never gona touch that (wiki is saying 2 in 17 last season, though not sure how many starts)
