There will be 4,904 Manchester United fans at Upton Park for this evening’s make-or-break FA Cup tie against West Ham – and that will be the club’s second biggest away end of the season.
Such a large travelling support could provide a major boost for the Reds in what is arguably the biggest match of the campaign, with a place in the Wembley semi-final against Everton up for grabs.
Having suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, which dented hopes of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League, Louis van Gaal is wholly aware of the significance of this game. “It is our last chance of a trophy so it is very important for the players, for the club, for the manager and for the fans,” the manager explained ahead of the 19:00 BST kick-off.
Of course, a special atmosphere is almost guaranteed in east London with this being the last-ever FA Cup tie at Upton Park ahead of West Ham moving to the Olympic Stadium next season.
As you can see in the table below, which lists the attendance figures for all of United’s away ends this season, the club’s biggest travelling support was registered through the turnstiles of the iPro Stadium for the FA Cup fourth-round victory at Championship side Derby County.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, United’s smallest away end of the season was at Arena Khimki in Russia for the Champions League draw against CSKA Moscow. Some 803 supporters made that trip, which is just one fan fewer than the 804 who journeyed to FC Midtjylland in the Europa League.
