The USSR sent the first human, man, woman, animal (and returned animal), and satellite into space, constructed the first ICBM, sent the first probe to Mars AND Venus (which was the first probe to hit another planet), had the first EVA and the first multi-person crew.

But yes, the US "won" the space race because they got to the moon first. /s

The USSR was the first country on the moon, they landed probes and a rover there before the US landed anything.
