Report: Man United in meltdown; players turn on Van Gaal

Manchester United’s dismal season keeps going from bad to worse.

Following their 3-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday it is claimed that players hit out at manager Louis Van Gaal for his bizarre tactical decisions during the game.

According to the very well sourced Neil Ashton of the Sun, United’s players have turned against Van Gaal following their second half shellacking by Spurs.

The report includes details regarding the treatment of Marcus Rashford as the 18-year-old striker was subbed out at half time on Sunday and humiliated in front of the entire squad with Van Gaal laying into him about the runs he was making against Tottenham’s defense (the best in the PL) and Toby Alderweireld in particular.

Ashley Young, a winger, came on in his place and looked lost up front, as Anthony Martial had United’s only shot on target during the game, a tame effort in the second half after he cut in from the left and beat three Spurs defenders. 18-year-old right back Timothy Fosu-Mensah was United’s best player but when he came off injured in the 68th minute, they crumbled. Substitute Matteo Darmian, an Italian international who has put in remarkably poor displays since being dropped and criticized by Van Gaal, looked lost and all three of Spurs’ goals in a disastrous five-minute spell came down his flank.

[ MORE: Van Gaal’s future remains unclear

Despite the dismal display — compounded by the fact that their team bus turned up late for the game and kick off was delayed — Van Gaal seemed fine with the result. In fact, he didn’t really see a problem in United losing at Spurs for the first time in 15 years. His future remains in doubt beyond this season, his second in charge, but it appears executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward wants to stick with the Dutchman and let Van Gaal see out the final year of his three-year deal.

The Red Devils are currently four points off fourth-placed Manchester City with six games to go and they face West Ham United in an FA Cup quarterfinal replay on Wednesday.

Jose Mourinho keeps throwing himself out there but United, as of yet, don’t seem to be interested.

Here’s an extract from Ashton’s report which sums up the current mood in United’s dressing room:

Van Gaal’s authority has been eroded over the past two seasons and the aura has pretty much disappeared. He is yesterday’s man.

The playing staff are acutely aware of that and are far more confrontational with him than in his first season.

He was fatally undermined by executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward earlier this year when he asked senior players about Van Gaal’s methods. The responses were not complimentary.

Woodward is a frequent dressing-room visitor after matches and he will know that the atmosphere is not good again.

Champions League at the half: Real, Ronaldo rolling vs Wolfsburg; Aguero’s half to forget

Real Madrid has erased its 2-0 deficit to Wolfsburg, while Man City missed a golden chance to put PSG to the knife at the Etihad Stadium.

Here’s what we’ve seen.

[ LIVE: Champions League scores ]

Manchester City 0-0 (2-2) Paris Saint-Germain

Sergio Aguero won a penalty for Manchester City in the Premier League side’s UEFA Champions League second leg with PSG, and it was downhill from there.

The Argentine striker’s attempt was very poor. Aguero bounced his penalty wide of Kevin Trapp, and then nearly needed the stretcher to get off the field minutes later.

The injury was a contact one, and he stayed in the game. As it stands, City will go through on away goals.

Real Madrid 2-0 (2-2) Wolfsburg

Cristiano Ronaldo is a really good soccer player, and even better when he’s playing in front of the Bernabeu.

The Portuguese mega star scored in the 15th and 17th minute, as Wolfsburg’s 2-0 lead has vanished in Madrid.

The winner of the second half advances, though a scoring tie in the net 45 minutes would push Wolfsburg through to the semifinals.

If it stays 2-2, kicks!

The second leg of two UEFA Champions League quarterfinals take place on Tuesday.

Real Madrid host Wolfsburg trailing 2-0 from the first leg in Germany, while the headline even is at the Etihad Stadium as Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain do battle.

[ LIVE: Champions League scores ]

City and PSG drew 2-2 in Paris in the first leg last week and the Premier League outfit will be the favorites to advance on home soil. That said, PSG turned over Chelsea in the second leg in England in the Round of 16 so Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Co. obviously don’t mind making the quick trip across the English Channel.

Manuel Pellegrini‘s side are out of the PL title race and have put all their eggs in the UCL basket for quite some time. They will be without captain and the heart of their defense Vincent Kompany, but with Kevin De Bruyne, Sergio Aguero and David Silva back in full flow, City will fancy their chances of reaching the final four for the first-time in history.

In the other quarterfinal clash Zinedine Zidane will have to rally his superstars to overturn a shock 2-0 deficit against Bundesliga side Wolfsburg. The notoriously hard to impress home fans at the Santiago Bernabeu may have the white hankies out for Zizou if Los Blancos fail to make the final four for the sixth-straight season. The pressure is on for the Spanish giants.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) Asian Cup champion Australia and Japan have been grouped together in the last round of Asian qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The Socceroos and Japan were drawn into Group B at a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday and will be joined by Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Thailand.

Iran and South Korea were the top-seeded teams in Group A, which also includes China, Uzbekistan, 2022 World Cup host Qatar and Syria.

The teams were drawn into two groups of six, with the matches starting in September. The top two teams in each group qualify automatically, with the third-place teams playing off for a shot at an inter-continental qualifier against the fourth-place team from CONCACAF in November 2017.

The teams were seeded and drawn from six pots based on the April 7 FIFA rankings, meaning Iran and Australia – the top teams in the rankings – could not meet nor could South Korea and Japan.

Australia is expected to open against 2007 Asian champion Iraq at home on Sept. 1 before traveling to the UAE. In October, the Australians travel to Saudi Arabia before returning for a home match against Japan, which has qualified for the last five World Cups. The Saudis reached the Round of 16 in 1994 and played in four consecutive World Cups but haven’t qualified since 2006. Also on Sept. 1, Iran opens against Qatar, South Korea hosts China, Japan is at home to UAE, Saudi Arabia takes on Thailand and Uzbekistan meets Syria.

Japan is the only team in the group with a winning record against Australia – eight wins and eight draws in their 23 international meetings.

“If you want to make it to such a prestigious tournament, you’ve got to beat the best. I’m excited,” Australia forward Tim Cahill, who scored twice in a comeback win over Japan in his World Cup debut in 2006, told Fox Sports Australia. “This is what football is all about. We’ve done so well in the Asian Cup by winning it – this is where it’s going to separate the men from the boys. We’re ready for it. We want to play the best.”

Australia coach Ange Postecoglou said the challenging draw would hone the Socceroos ahead of its bigger target.

“As Champions of Asia we will show due respect to all countries,” he said, “but (we’re) focused on continuing our journey that has aspirations greater than simply qualifying for the World Cup.”

South Korea is growing in confidence after reaching the final of the 2015 Asian Cup, topping their second-round group with 24 unanswered goals.

“We played exceptionally well in 2015 so we’re full of confidence. I’m very optimistic that we’ll make it to Russia,” South Korea coach Uli Stielike said ahead of the draw. The South Koreans have played in nine World Cups and reached the semifinals in 2002 while co-hosting the tournament with Japan, which remains the best run by an Asian team at the sport’s marquee tournament.

The South Koreans open against China, which scraped into the last round with two late wins to maintain its hopes of reaching the World Cup for only the second time.

War-torn Syria reached the final round despite the ongoing upheaval, forcing the national team to play the entire second round away from home.

The Syrians finished behind Japan in the previous stage to progress as one of the four best second-place teams.

“FIFA slayer” Loretta Lynch explains emotions on corruption scandal

The U.S. Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, has become a hero figure for soccer fans across the globe.

[ PLAYBACK: Spurs still believe

Last May the U.S. Department of Justice, along with the Swiss authorities, launched a wide-ranging investigation into corruption at FIFA, world soccer’s govenring body.

That led to the indictment of 14 FIFA officials among many other individuals connected to the organization.

Since Lynch and the U.S. authorities intervened long-time leader Sepp Blatter has stepped down and been replaced by Gianni Infantino as president, while sweeping reforms have taken place among the way FIFA is structure and many high-ranking officials have been replaced.
