I think we have to accept the fact that we don't know what's going on behind the scenes. I don't know if he's manager material or not, but one thing that Giggs is not is disloyal to the club and his boss. Maybe he is giving suggestions that van Gaal is overruling, or maybe he's being passive like you said (either because of under-confidence or because of a genuine attempt to absorb and learn). I think we'll only know for sure after van Gaal leaves or is sacked.

Hmmm not disloyal to the club yet was one of the ones who made life difficult for Moyes?

I personally think Giggs is simply trying to be a professional here. Being the assistant manager may provide you with the opportunity to question & doubt certain decisions made by the manager, but all these should be done in good faith of the manager's overall team management.

It is also obvious that as the assistant manager, Giggs should be a pillar of support to LVG as much as possible. As much as Giggs is a United legend and a long-term manager in the making (hopefully), he should be respectful to whoever the main gaffer is and accept the decisions made (to a reasonable extent, of course).

Having a baffling manager like LVG may hurt the club, but having a conflicting relationship between a proven veteran such as LVG and a club legend vying to be the future manager in Giggs will surely hurt United even more.

Ryan Giggs: Boss, we at United play high tempo football, with two wingers, getting the ball wide and score loads of goals. This is the Manchester United way.

LVG: OK Ryan. I have managed Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich as well as my national time, I have a philosophy and we'll do it my way because I'm the boss.

What exactly is Ryan Giggs supposed to do? How many other assistant managers out there are being questioned about their input?

I have no idea how good or bad a job Giggs has done. When the players mention him, they always talk well of him. Speculating for the sake of speculating with no information is a total waste of time. He is the assistant manager, he follows the direction of the manager. That is his job spec. Sure he can counter LVGs in discussion but LVG calls the shots.

Can you imagine Mike Phelan telling Fergie what to do? And Fergie accepting it, even if he didn't agree? Wouldn't happen.

I think if we were actually in a position of stability then I would be all for Giggs getting the job. Right now if he were to take over it would be another massive gamble that could ultimately tarnish his reputation. I want him as the United manager at some point but I want the club to have a better foundation for him.

I doubt it's Gigg's job to go up to LVG and say 'hey Louis, I know you've won loads of titles, but I've been here for years and our fans want to see us attack'... and even if he did LVG would say he's here to try to win, not to attack. It's a board issue imo, not an assistant manager issue!

He's assistant manager, he's clearly not assisting very well.

Giggs has been part of two failed management teams. We don't know what his role is, or his influence, or how much power he really has; but he should take responsibility for being part of those management teams.
