two territories on the mainland**, several more scattered around the place. we even (sort of) have antarctic territory.

Fun fact: we have more than 2 territories, (Christmas island, Cocos Islands etc.) but I always assumed that they were offshore. Turns out there's the Jervis Bay Territory which is on the mainland.

More than 2.

Ashmore and Cartier Islands, Australian Antarctic Territory, Christmas Island, Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Coral Sea Islands, Heard Island and McDonald Islands, Jervis Bay Territory & Norfolk Island are all Australian Territories.

Although none of them are mainland except for Jarvis Bay. Also none of them have a population above 2500. (I think)

Why would you think a country as large as Australia wouldn't have states?

[–]HandMeMyThinkingPipe [スコア非表示]  (0子コメント)

So I think this comes from the fact that the country Americans have the most interaction with is Canada which has provinces instead of states, after that they might have some conception of how the UK works. Of course Mexico has states but most Americans don't really bother to learn much about Mexican political structure. Another possibility is that the American states have a lot of constitutional authority and I suspect (without doing research) that most countries don't give as much power as we do to their individual states.

Also a common reference for America used by non Americans is "the states"

States aren't due to the country being big, it's due to the fact Australia is a federation of colonies.

It's most likely even if that wasn't the case Australia would have made states. States serve an important purpose for large countries.

TIL there are a lot of people in this thread who didn't know Australia has states.

I would wager almost every nation has states.
