The last thing we need is another clear out. We have some deadweight we can shift but otherwise, half the players you've mentioned are good squad options.

I'd be happy if we were to let Fellaini, Jones and Carrick go. I still think Mata is a very good player despite his underwhelming time at United but if he doesn't fit the manager's plans, by all means get rid however I'd prefer we kept him assuming he is happy to take a smaller role in the squad. Rooney is the final player I think needs to go. He has been poor for a couple seasons now and his overall contribution isn't what it once was and probably wouldn't warrant a starting place in a Europa League level side, obviously we're aiming much higher. Similar to Mata, if he is willing to take up a smaller role at the club I'd be delighted for him to stay, would be a shame to see my one of my favorite players depart. Issue with that is Rooney likely wouldn't be happy to take up that role, it doesn't look good for his image nor us (having a bench player on £250k a week) and Rooney is also the kind of player that always wants to play. Would he even be an effective impact player? Sadly I doubt it.

Rojo, Schweinsteiger, Young, Valencia and Lingard are still good squad and Darmian shouldn't be written off so quickly. Defenders typically take time adapting to new leagues and the Prem is about as different as it gets from Serie A. According to /r/soccer we have a real gem on our hands in Darmian.

Bastian Schweinsteiger : basically a waste this year.

Wrong

Not sure why OP deleted his reply to you, but Basti has made 31 appearances, not 18. /u/SalvinY7

yeah that was my mistake. looked at the appearances wrong

He has missed a lot of matches (yes I know he is not the only one), and he hasn't played particularly well in the once he did play.

Can you name a match he didnt play well in?

Do you enjoy making yourself look stupid?

you are aware that LVG has publicly stated that he has been disappointed with his performances, right?

I'm not just making this up out of thin air

Saying that he was a waste this year is incredibly short sighted.

Just having someone like him around the training pitch with the younger players we have now is fantastic.

as I said, which you (being stupid) are ignoring, is that "Waste" probably wasn't the right word

But he isn't getting any younger, he has missed a lot of matches and didn't play up to his standards when he did. So I really don't think it's that off base

What we do need to consider before going through another clearout is whether we can find quality replacements/ upgrades.

Another consideration is that hopefully with a new manager next season, I would like to see these players play in their proper positions and in a style of football that suits this team because we can't fully blame them for not playing well this season if the football LVG has been playing is not conducive to the player's strengths, eg playing fellaini as a holding midfielder

the manager situation will definitely be a huge factor.

But in my opinion, every player listed, are guys that in my opinion, who are expendable

The only players that I believe should be sold are Fellaini and Mata. It's no coincidence that both were Moyes' signings and that they were panic buys and nothing less.

Fellaini just doesn't fit our system and should go to a club where his style of play would be appreciated. As for Mata, he really is a luxury player. It's either you play him as a 10 and revolve the team around him or don't play it him at all.

I disagree about Carrick and I do think that he should still be given a contract extension. Although, he shouldn't start for us anymore, his experience is still important to the team and we need that since we have such a young squad now. Carrick, Rooney and Smalling are the remaining 'winners' from the Fergie era and can still influence the dressing room in a positive way since they've pretty much won everything.

Carrick was a tough one. I get the locker room part of it. But from what I have seen, he has been poor. But I think Bastian and Blind to a lesser extent are more than capable of replacing his leadership.
