Hi, I am a Greek-American that is vegan. Vegans are people who don't eat any or use any animal products, not even milk or honey. I am gonna visit my family back in Greece soon. I have family in Korinthos, a small village in Achaia, a cousin who studies and lives in Athens and I may visit my maternal village in Lakonia. In northern New Jersey where I live, I find it very easy to be vegan logistically in terms of shopping for groceries or even eating out. So I have some practical questions for those living in Greece, I hope I can get answers to.
1) Is it easy to find non-dairy nut based milks or soy milk? I personally prefer almond milk and it is easy to find where I live. I can make my own and have before, but I have a high end, expensive blender(Vitamix) and haven't tried with a cheap one. Is it easy to find items like tofu, something equivalent to Ener-g egg replacer, and other items that make it easier to be vegan?
2) Are there places to eat out that I cold find vegan food easily? In the area where I live I can go to just about any place that makes burritos which are ubiquitous and just tell them no meat, no cream and no cheese. Or any place that has sushi and get a vegan sushi. Or any Chinese food establishment and substitute tofu for meat. Or I can get pizza specifically made with no cheese and instead with more vegetable toppings. But at what passes for Greek establishments here in the States, I cannot think of a vegan item besides lentil soup. I keep asking for spanakopita without cheese, but everywhere they make it with feta. There is mustalevria, but it is not a main course and cannot be made into a dietary staple.
3) Do Greeks take it bad when people refuse food, which I will have to do often? It seems to me over there people are less regulated by money and value being a good host to guests still as a matter of reputation. Over here, most Americans will not offer tea, coffee, left-overs or whatever meal they may eat soon to visitors as Greeks will often do. Infact Americans generally don't consider it rude to just eat by themselves in front of you while their guests just watch, since in such a money based, market worshiping society, the guiding assumption is each person has access to money to buy their own, anyway. Thus I don't have problems of creating hurt feeling by refusing non-vegan food, since generally Americans don't even offer any.
I can read Greek but not write it, so you can respond in Greek if it is easier for you. Thanks.
