    The number of homicides recorded by the police in 2013/14 (537) reduced by 21 compared with 2012/13 (558), homicide is at its lowest level since 1978 (when 532 were recorded). The reducing trend in murder and homicide is not reflected in a reduction in violence crime with injury across England and Wales (up 3% compared with last year).

  • In 2013/14, more than two-thirds of homicide victims were male.
  • The most common method of killing continues to be by sharp instrument.
  • Female victims were more likely to be killed by someone they knew. In most of these cases, female victims were killed by a current or ex-partner while male victims were most likely to be killed by a friend or acquaintance.
  • Victims aged under 16 years were most likely to be killed by a parent or step-parent.
