The number of homicides recorded by the police in 2013/14 (537) reduced by 21 compared with 2012/13 (558), homicide is at its lowest level since
1978 (when 532 were recorded). The reducing trend in murder and homicide is not reflected in a reduction in violence crime with injury across England and Wales (up 3% compared with last year).

In 2013/14, more than two-thirds of homicide victims were male.
The most common method of killing continues to be by sharp instrument.
Female victims were more likely to be killed by someone they knew. In most of these cases, female victims were killed by a current or ex-partner while male victims were most likely to be killed by a friend or acquaintance.
Victims aged under 16 years were most likely to be killed by a parent or step-parent.
