Nostalrius, the recent Vanilla Wow private server shut down by blizzard, was an underground operation run by blizzard. They purposely created it and shut it down to stimulate outrage within the Vanilla community as well as those who don't even play through means of public outrage. After this, they create vanilla and past expansion servers on blizzard and subscriptions go through the roof.
