honestly trying to find logic in LVG'S player selection is a hopless cause

That surely means the club thinks he's not good enough anymore yet Van Gaal still keeps playing him every game. What is the point in keeping him in the starting lineup now that he's basically been given the directions out the door. Any outgoing player like that should be benched.

Giggs & Scholes never signed their one year extensions until the season was practically over, I'd imagine the situation with Carrick is similar. Carrick isn't a problem.

Carrick was fine today.

Seems he gets a harsh time because of his age while Blind gets praised despite being a part of us conceding goals yet again. He got loads of praise for winning the ball back from Dier but it was his fault for dwelling on the ball.

I just want people to look at Blind for the first goal and tell me he did a good job.

Look at the 3rd goal when Carrick wasn't pressing effectively and smalling had to push further

How's that related to Blind getting a free pass though? You've still managed to do what he said- look past Blind's error and make Carrick out to be a scapegoat of sorts here.

Dunno. Yesterday he seemed to be just a dude walking around, did absolutely nothing at all. I can't really comment because yesterday's game was total tactical ineptitude.

Was set up for countering I thought. Add better defensive stability with carrick over herrera to soak up the spurs pressure, then press high up with the young players up top to win the ball as high up the field as possible. That's what I thought anyways

Yup - that's why Lingard was in the middle, why Rashford was up top and why Carrick was playing.

It's like when Vidic had signed for Inter, out season was over but we kept playing him in every game despite needing to develop Jones and Smalling.

basti is injured. who else will take up his place? this sub will immolate if fellaini starts over carrick.

Herrera. I know they are not the same kind of player but we have a good midfielder wasted sitting in the bench.

The "not the same player" point is crucial. Carrick is playing because United messed up last summer. The only similar player in the squad is a crock. Herrera should be playing as the most as advanced of the midfield three.

The motivation is gone already at this point for him

That's a very bold assumption to make about someone who's conduct has been nothing but professional since his arrival.

'If you don't believe in me I'm not going to fight for you' - is basic sportsman psychology. Don't tell me his lack of contract extension does not affect his motivation because that is a load of bollocks. Don't be naive son.

Be as condescending as you like but if you think that one single facet is the only thing affecting his mental state of playing for the club then I'm simply saying I don't agree with you.

  • He's said that he remains hopeful for an England call up. He's not going to cut his nose to spite his face and not put any effort in as a 'fuck you' if he's got a goal in mind that keeps his motivation levels up.

  • He's mid-30's, not a teenager. He's also never been one to speak out/act out to the press, on the pitch etc. If there's anyone in our squad that is more likely to respect the contract he's attached to regardless of what next season holds, I'd put my money on Carrick being the most likely. In terms of professionalism, he's one of the closest we've had to a G/P.Neville.

  • He's said he's not ready to retire. Why sabotage potential suitors next year by giving up now?

  • If he truly has no motivation as you've said, that would show in the training ground and on the pitch. I might not back LVG any more but if there's one thing LVG has about his personality, it's a strict demand for players playing exactly how he likes in the way he likes. LVG would not pick him if he was moping about and purposefully playing/training below standard.

Additionally,

Don't tell me his lack of contract extension does not affect his motivation because that is a load of bollocks.

Please try not to put words in my mouth, I never said a lack of contract extension doesn't effect his motivation. It absolutely would - potentially negatively, potentially positively. I'm pointing out the fact you said "the motivation is gone" - i.e. you alluded to No Contract = No Motivation.

Holy shit an eloquent, reasonable and well-reasoned reply to a cunt of a comment. Am I really on reddit?
