It's mostly a drug problem. In San Francisco most people without any money can get an SRO right in the center of town and the city (or state?) will pay for it. Problem is when these people get fucked up and trash the place...they end up not wanting to live there anymore.

Secondly as these drug addicts get more annoying with aggressive panhandling, assault, pooping on sidewalks, ect..people that live and vote in these cities start caring less about these people and start just wanting to see them gone. I live in San Francisco and as this point I would not be that upset if they were just killed off.

This mentality is sad, but living down in Santa Cruz I have a hard time disagreeing with it. I like to think of myself as empathetic to people's plights and generally very liberal. But seriously... fuck the homeless man. I'm over it. After living here for close to 15 years now, fuck it. I'm done with them.

Most homeless (In LA) aren't willing or able to live a normal life and return to society. As in they aren't willing to work (would rather live in a tent over at skid row), or are unable to hold a job down due to mental health (addiction, schizophrenia, etc). I don't know what the solution is, but the mentality of "They're good people who just need one shot to get on their feet" is bullshit. There's many programs and ways for that, and most homeless who are of sound mind who just happened to get to where they are through unfortunate circumstance do get off the street eventually.

Of course there's exceptions, but as far as a blanket statement goes the above is a more realistic view than what a lot of the extreme liberal view in LA would provide. I don't really know what the solution is, other than making our society as a whole find a place for mentally ill that isn't skid row. Where their problems are exacerbated. And for the ones who are lazy and can't find the will to get out of skid row, who are sound of mind, fuck 'em.

I've always wondered why "can't find the will" is not considered a form of mental illness. People vary in willpower right? Why is this not seen as an attribute instead of a choice?

Just down the coast from you. I've been trying to think of a better word than "homeless" to describe the panhandler types I've been seeing. The aggressive ones tend to be very young "gypsy" types that apparently live on state park land, filtering down into the city to harass people for money.

Well there's the ones who clearly have mental issues and my heart goes out to them. Then you got your older folks. Kinda feel bad for them too.

But what you're talking about. In my office we call them...

Fucking STREET RATS

I think in the 80s we used to envision many of the homeless as families where maybe the provider lost their jobs...or had some massive injustice laid upon them.

Then we move out of the house and start having interactions with these people...and uh..it's different.

[–]muchhuman 8ポイント9ポイント  (0子コメント)

maybe the provider lost their jobs..

This is still likely the case, only you're running across the same provider several years after giving up completely and turning to "This is my life now".

[–]neutronknows 11ポイント12ポイント  (3子コメント)

Exactly.

At some point you think... oh they must have washed out of the Santa Cruz job market (cause there aren't any jobs here). Or maybe they got evicted because they couldn't make rent (we're right up there with SF and NY).

Nah. We import them here from everywhere else. Because our culture in Santa Cruz supports them. We do it to ourselves. We try and solve the problem here like its our faults these people are homeless. Its not. They come here because we tolerate them and they know they won't get hassled with or fucked with by police. Also the weather is super nice.

California . . . Super cool to the homeless.

[–]mankstar 10ポイント11ポイント  (1子コメント)

Seattle is pretty bad too. I visited my cousin there and this homeless guy walks up to us.

"You got any change?"

"Nah, sorry."

"You're going to want to have change."

Like, what the fuck? These assholes are so brazen about taking your money. I've had people block my path walking down the sidewalk in California asking me for change.

The trash is what kills me. Especially in my neighborhood. There is a shelter near by but it doesn't take in anyone intoxicated or on drugs... so guess where they end up? On my fucking Cul De Sac or chillin in the bushes by the Costco. Leaving their shit everywhere (sometimes literally) and getting into hobo fights at like 3 AM
