You don't actively use information like this. It does inform your opinions though. It helps to shape your view of the world, helps you to recognize historical patterns in politics, etc.

More importantly, you don't just sit around listening to someone lecture on Hitler. You learn research skills. You learn how to read and write critically. You learn how to recognize bias. Group cooperation, public speaking, debating, etc. etc. etc.
