The Red Chinese under Mao were apparently afraid to think independently. And things like Buddhism or its monks really threatened Mao's whole concept of "revolution." Look at the irony of it now: the PRC is one of the biggest capitalist nations on the planet. Long gone are such things as the "cultural revolution" and Mao's little red books.

Now if the PRC could just loose it's fetish about trying to control all things Tibetan! ..Maybe in time! ..Who knows..?
