His answer is not just correct. It is the best answer possible.

The question tells you to be creative. This is correct but this isn't creative.

It says you can be as creative as you like. This is the simplest answer......which if you have studied math at any level is always the best answer. You could also argue that it is very creative.....most kids wouldn't see that you could use the question itself.

"There are two types of people in the world: 1) Those that can extrapolate from incomplete data sets."

Actually, that's not true. There are situations where leaving a number in terms of pi, tau, or e is considered more correct

No, there are three types of people in the world. Those who can do math, and those who can't.

Personally, I like to think the kid did some complex differential equation, involving penguins and fish populations, then simply reduced it to the answer, in his head. 7 fucking penguins.

I would say his answer is actually very creative in that he came up with a solution that met the requirements perfectly (make your answer as simple as you want) but is also completely unexpected.

I always thought anything the teacher writes in parenthesis was optional. Just like the stop signs that have white borders.

creativity is relative. correctness is not.

it is pretty creative to not waste your time reinventing the wheel.

The teacher didn't really say it was incorrect. To the teacher, the child comes across as being a smartass or just plain lazy.

It was creative enough to surprise the person who wrote the question.

That's more like an eyeroll but whatever.
