Very good defensive performance. The team was obviously set up to defend and make it hard to break down. With Lingard, Martial and Rashford up front as outlets for counter attack, a very different tactic from what we are used to. We seem to have switched to the 4-3-3 we used last season, with carrick at the base and Schneiderlin, Lingard slightly more in front. Mata shifted back to the rw. Possibly why Memphis is constantly dropped, as the interchangeability of Memphis, Lingard and Rashford makes them a better choice for this counter attack set up

Second half Mata was subbed off. A defensive sub as Silva was playing down the middle and City had no LW, so Mata was subbed off for a cdm. Carrick dropped even deeper to deal with Bony and Aguero.Not a good decision imo, gave City midfielders too much space when Yaya looks to be the most threatening one. Although Bony held up play really really well and gave City a focal point for attack

Darmian and Rojo, pretty poor attacking wise, but great defensively. However, Sterling got pulled out early so Darmian had an easier time. He had a vital interception from Silva though. Rojo was up against Navas who reminds me of Valencia, always pushing it down the wing and blindly crossing it. Speaking of Valencia, not a good game by him, gave Aguero too much space twice, way too dangerous

Smalling and Blind defended Ageuro well, always making it hard for him to turn and face the goal. Smalling was pretty lucky to stay on, but made up for the penalty decision i guess.

Very interesting that Lingard is central defensively, but runs to the wings when attacking. Always pressuring Fernadinho and making it difficult for him

Carrick does well to cover the space in front of the defense, picking up Silva when he drops into the space, and sometimes picking up Yaya when Schneiderlin loses him

Not really a supporter of Mata, but omg he put in a great shift defensively. Always sprinting to cover the space on the rw, closes down clitchy brilliantly

Martial and Rashford, our outlets for counter attacks, brilliant. Holds up the ball well, makes excellent runs and is too quick for the City defense. Rashford should have own a penalty as well. Those dribbles and touches by Martial are so sexy. Both these youngsters ran their hearts out
