We tried him in midfield at times last season and he wasn't anything special. Certainly nowhere near good enough to warrant the constant Scholes "comparisons" he's gotten over the years.

Only way you could draw a parallel is those long diagonal hollywood balls Rooney can pull off, but that's where the comparison ends for me.

Rooney doesn't have the touch, ball retention or intelligence to control a game from midfield like Scholes.

Sadly he hasn't been anything special in any position over the past couple seasons. We have better players in every position and even in those positions you'd think we should be looking to improve on what we currently have.

Why? That's his worst position of the 3 (9, 10 and 8). He has no creative mind and his touch is appalling, he'd kill every counter attack. But even then, Mata is one of the first names people want gone and replaced by a top player, that player isn't Rooney.

Bullshit. Rooney this season as a number 10 has scored 1 goal and created no assists and looked generally awful. In the past he may have been a better number 10, in the past he was a far better player who wasn't slow and sloppy in possession. When he played as a CM last season he looked OK, he looked a higher midtable CM. When played as a number 10 this and last season he has played his worst matches and again, he doesn't have the attributes to be a creative midfielder.

Rooney was average all season and didn't even play as a number 10 that often. His best games like against Pool, City came as a CM or ST

And I wasn't wrong. His two best games came as a CM or striker. His one other memorable game (Spurs and QPR) was also as a striker. Other good games came against Newcastle and Hull where played as a ST and CM.

Fun fact, Rooney only scored in 3 matches when played as a number 10 last season.

    He fancies himself there, no doubt, but he doesn't have any of the attributes. He loves the theatrical switch too much (I've lost count of the number of times I've seen him fuck up a perfectly good attack by stopping and arcing a beautiful cross-field pass to Rafael or Valencia), and he doesn't have the vision Scholes had. He'd be a marginal upgrade on any of our other central midfielders in terms of his mobility, but please god let us buy some world class players this summer.

    Rooney's future position is bench at best. He's never gonna be a mercurial midfield presence, despite so many people wanting him to be. His distribution is nowhere near intelligent enough, his first touch is wildly inconsistent... he's not cut out for it.

    He's not mobile enough and he's nowhere near as good on the ball as Scholes was. He won't be a midfielder.

    Well James is a possible option this summer so we have to go for him. Wazza can stick to attack break the record and leave as legend. He lost his pace and good touch though.
