But the governments in europe aren't democratic socialist (unless Luxemburg came back from the dead while I was playing Darkest Hour and took over Europe).

It's the only way it's used today. It is not a 'strange offshoot of real socialism', it's the only real socialism.

Socialism is a category. Communism belongs to this category. Anarchism belongs to this category. Democratic socialism belongs to this category. "Socialism with chinese characteristics" belongs to this category.

They were used interchangeably. Communism was just adopted by Leninist, but they also still called themselves Socialists iirc.

Only if your vision of Socialism is filtered through the eyes of the late Senator McCarthy. Northern Europe is pretty well integrated into the global capitalist economy.
What they do with their tax funds is their own business.

Socialism in Northern Europe is actually powered the combined spinning of Bakunin's, Luxemburg's, and Marx's corpses whenever someone says "europe is socialist".

You're right :) Democratic socialism was promoted by Luxemburg when she revolted against the bourgeoisie in Germany.
Unfortunately social democrats killed Luxemburg who was the most likely democratic socialist to make any substantial change to a capitalist system :(

No, I just don't care about one irrelevant person dying in what was presumably the early 20th century. It's irrelevant. The fact of the matter is that today, democratic socialism in northern europe is the only socialism that has ever worked.

Revolutionary Catalonia, the Zapatistas in Mexico, the communists in Kurdistan. Of course you can't list too many because any actual socialist or anarchist movement is destroyed by the united states (see all of South America).
Luxemburg will always be relevant when talking about democratic socialism because it's her theory it's like talking about special relativity but completely ignoring anything Einstein said about it.
