I've heard that theory before, and I honestly don't think there's anything to it.

  • It's 60 years since he made his debut.
  • He turns 80 next year. There are rumours that he's stepping down from his position.
  • We might not have many chances to honour him while he's still with us.

I really don't think there's any ulterior motive here. We're just honouring a legend.

I've been wondering why they suddenly decided it now but maybe, it's to deflect from the poor season with something lighter and meaningful.

Of course it could just be a case of now before it's too late but the timing and all seems sudden that's all. I highly doubt it's about Mourinho even one but though.

Fair enough, I thought that as well but I figured I'd see what everyone else thought, I guess I need to put that tinfoil helmet away.

I get what your saying. I dont think its purely because of Jose but I do think all of this is a bit of a sweetener by Ed to keep Sir Bobby happy.

Out of all the people who seem to be in the boat of giving the 92 lads more power and making Giggs manager Sir Bobby has the most say and power in the club so It makes sense to keep him happy if you are about to do the exact opposite.

I think it's more that he's celebrating 60 years since his debut and that he's an old man who may not have a lot of time left (unfortunately) so celebrating him now when he can appreciate it could be the reason

This year marks the 60th year of him being associated with United. That's apparently the occasion.

It makes no sense for the club to try and appease him though. He's a non-exec director so he doesn't have a direct say in these sorts of decisions, though obviously his opinions are respected, and he's not the sort of person who would break rank and run the board/club down if he didn't agree with the appointment. A more likely scenario could be that he's stepping down from the board, not saying that's the case but it makes more sense than the appeasement angle.
